Power…Courage…A Prerequisite for the Spiral Zone!

Growing up there were so many cool cartoons. One that always caught this Dorks attention, and remains one of the lesser followed/known is the Spiral Zone. Airing in 1987-88, Spiral Zone was the Trademarked to Tonka toys and ran for 65 episodes. In the end, the series was a financial flop on the part of Tonka, so it appeared they never wanted the light of day to shine upon this great creation ever again. Until recently, the only episodes available for viewing was a small collection of 6 episodes released on VHS by Tonka. Well one man’s love for the series and his shear tenacity shined through to provide a new 8 disc DVD set collecting all of the original episodes!

Justin Timberlake rumoured to star as the Green Lantern….

Hmmm….so I have heard a rumour that pop star Justin Timberlake is reportedly been considered to wear the emerald power ring on the big screen. Acccording to Aint It Cool News  they have begun screen testing for the role of the Green Lantern and it appears that Timberlake is in the running. I wonder what the Guardians of the Universe would think about this huh? I could think of about two dozen people that would make a better Green Lantern than Timberlake but then again what do I know I am just some nerd with a blog about comic books and Sci Fi with “The Beyonder” at the top of our website as our mascot!

Anyway this is what they had to say about it:

John Byrne:Best Artist Ever!

So the 1frombeyond’s post got me all fired up yesterday about MY favorite comic book artist of all time, Mr. John Byrne! Ever since I was a kid I loved and knew his artwork. I’d always get pretty pumped when I would see a comic book drawn by him-even at my young age I just knew there was something special about it. Perhaps it was his amazing sense of detail? Either way there are so many things I truely love about his artwork. To me he is one of the All Time Greatest and most influential comic book artists ever. Right up there with Kirby and yes even…um…Liefeld.

Anyway I decided to post some of my favorite pics that I have always loved of his artwork. Whether it’s a cover or interior panel it’s clear he was and is still the master. In a day and age where any and every band is reuniting and Harrison Ford is once again Indiana Jones, I do truely think it’s time that Marvel reunites John Byrne & Chris Claremont  for another run on the X-Men!!

tony stark get’s drunk with the toxic avenger!?!

I just came across this cool little cartoon series “The Greatest Fan Film of All Time” today and found it to be QUITE amusing! It has alot of  neat appearances  by some pretty awesome characters and best of all it’s pretty damn humorous! I love the fact to that they include Vindicator of Alpha flight into the mix too as well as The Toxic Avenger as he get’s drunk with Tony Stark. Check out the Stan Lee appearance too near the end-classic! I just watched the first two episodes and it’s pretty cool. Now I’m gonna check out the last three to see how this turns out. check out the first two here:

Batman: Ashes To Ashes

Hey Dark Knight fans check out this french fan made film “Batman: Ashes to Ashes”. This is a pretty visually unique mini movie even if it borrows off the Sin City style a bit too much at times. It’s different to hear a Batman story spoken in french but if anything it’s a neat little homage to the worlds most popular vigilante. I picure this as a sort of  ‘What If?’ type storyline with Bill Sienkiewicz  style artwork coming to life. Anyway It’s a neat little film that portrays the Batman universe in a whole new light. Still this doesn’t touch ‘Batman: Dead End’  (yeah I may be the only, one but I thought it was cool when the Alien and Predator show up!). It seems right now is the time to be making fan films! Keep em’ coming!

Here’s the Trailer:

I had trouble getting the full movie to appear here. It can only be seen fully in HD Dailymotion Batman: Ashes to Ashes. CHECK IT OUT!

Best Comedic website: Christwire.org! This just HAS to be a joke!

So  I was looking for a response to The1frombeyond’s post on gay villains and stumbled upon this website called Christwire.org    and all I can really say about it is WOW. I figure that this site has just GOT to be a joke and if not it would be so much funnier. I think this could be related to the Onion but i’m not sure.

There is pretty recent post on the site called, “More Proof Marvel and DC “Comics” Promote Homogay Agenda” it’s just got to be read to be beleived. It really tied in with the topics here over the last couple days- plus check this picture out (sooo rad) that came from the article entitled “Marvel Now Pomotes Gay Agenda With Wolverine Toy “!

Deadpool: the ultimate admitted rip-off!!

Alot of people accuse Rob Liefeld to be somewhat of a hack and almost all of the characters he creates are usually rip offs of existing characters. But to save his soul he did help create one really rad marvel character who has as of recently become insanely popular-Deadpool! So yeah he finally can take claim for something really original and everyone can forget about his famous picture of Captain America sporting gigantic boobs-right? Not so fast. As you may or may not already know Deadpool is an admitted rip-off of DC’s famous villain Deathstroke.

The incredible hulk vs. Superman!!

When I was a kid there was nothing in the world I loved more than the Incredible Hulk!! I was always pretending to be the Hulk, playing with my Hulk action figures, reading Incredible Hulk comic books, watching the Hulk on tv and drawing pictures of the Hulk!! I remember other kids always telling me that Superman would kick the Hulk’s ass! I disagreed and also was wise enough to know that they couldn’t fight because The Hulk was a Marvel character and Superman was a DC character (later this changed and they did indeed fight a few times-Superman always winning! Damn!). Well that didn’t stop me from making my own comic book cover for this epic battle! I was very young when I drew this picture but as you can see I was pretty accurate with my comic book covers and dammit I wanted to see these two fight! Most of all I wanted to see the Hulk beat that goody two shoes Superman to pulp! As a child I pretty much thought Superman was a big loser! Anyway here’s the epic picture I drew of quite possibly The Hulk and Superman’s first battle!!

Apparently for some reason I thought DC comics stood for Delly Comics. Weird.

Batman movies should go back to Tim Burton.

“Never rub another man’s rhubarb.”

-The Joker

I was watching the 1989 Batman movie the other day, mainly as an attempt to convince myself that it’s actually another Prince movie (which is the reason I look forward to time travel. I will convince his Purple Majesty to make more), but  instead I found myself enjoying it the way I did in the theater that summer as a nine year-old.

Following  it up with Batman Returns, I reached a  holy shit! type of epiphany: It hit me why I love these movies so much: They feel like comic books. The Joker, The Penguin, the Gotham City sets, the costumes. They were suspenseful but very comic-like. Dark in a way (Pee Wee dumping a child in a sewer at Christmas!), but also really comical (Pee Wee dumping a child in a sewer at Christmas).

This really got me thinking that Tim Burton needs to continue where he left off. He started something great that went on to become something like the comic-book equivalent of the mullet and more recently to the great, but all-too “real”. Batman doesn’t need to be fucking real, he’s Batman! The more I think about, the less I want his costumes and finances explained to me. Fuck Lucious Fox and Research and Development (But let’s keep Morgan Freeman in it somewhere) and dog-resistant kevlar. Why do we even need to know that stuff?

The Super Powers Collection withstands the test of time!

Anyone remember DC’s Super Powers Collection action figures from the 80’s? They were probably the best action figures ever! They today still look amazing and there were soooo many of them. They made figures of some pretty obscure characters too. My favorites were The Red Tornado, the Joker, Penguin, Brainiac and the Flash but they were all pretty amazing really.
