Comic Cover of the Week: Totally 80s HEAVY Metal Marvel!
The NEW Defenders were a pretty awesome era of the team with a totally sweet line up and one of the team’s best member’s GARGOYLE! I say that here we have one of Marvel’s most METAL covers, 1984’s issue #136. We see a wild sort of thrash metal style satanic themed masterpiece featuring a pentagram glowing while Gargoyle’s brain fries! What a great simple but utterly breathtaking cover by Frank Cirocco that could have been easily used by a band like Slayer in the 80s!!
Comic Cover of the Week: Bill Sienkiewicz Rules Marvel’s SOLOMON KANE Limited Series?!
I never knew that this comic book series was ever a thing way back in 1985-but after seeing this of course incredible cover from master class artist Bill Sienkiewicz I’m ready to track down this limited series and give it a whirl! It’s covers like these that sell a series and Bill’s ALWAYS on top of his game. That being said all six covers for this series are actually pretty incredible, but I guess it’s what’s on the inside that counts though right? We’ll see. In this case though I’m all in to check it out and from thew looks of it-it’s a cheap one to acquire!
Comic Cover of the Week: CHRISTMAS With MAN-THING?!
‘Tis the season to be jolly even for the Man-Thing apparently?! Yes! Even the smushy green monster has got the holiday spirit as the festive cover from 1998 clearly shows! I’ve always really liked Man-Thing he’s really a bizarre anti-hero and here he’s decided to don the Santa Claus duds for the cover, Liam Sharp kinda gives him a more sexy furry looks than I normally like but regardless it’s still pretty sweet Holiday themed cover from the late 1990s!
Comic Cover of the week: Web of Spider-man #8!
Back in the day ‘Web of Spider-Man’ was one of my favorites of the webheads many titles at the time. Particularly because I found that this series had some of his best comic book covers and Of course I was a giant fan of the wildly controversial black Spider-man costume. Looking back at it it’s aged like fine wine And it always looked super bad ass on covers with overly simplistic design proving again that less is sometimes indeed more. Covers like this make me really miss the comic books of the 1980s, artist Geof Isherwood created an iconic cover from an amazing era….
Halloween Comic Cover of the Week: Ben Grimm Meets the UNDEAD!
I was such a gigantic fan of The Thing as a kid (and still today) and would buy pretty much any comic book he appeared in if my mom would buy it for me! All of my time seeing him in the Fantastic Four had always made me wish he’d get his own solo book. In a way he’d already gotten in with ‘Marvel Two in One’ which featured him and a revolving cast of wild often times unknown characters from the Marvel Universe. But the real deal series for him came right after in 1983-a solo comic series written by John Byrne. Anyway it was one of my favorite comic books and it got really interesting when he quit the Fantastic Four (was replaced by She-Hulk) and went off planet for a bizarre series of adventures. one of my favorite covers was from THIS awesome simplistic spooky tale that’s perfect for Halloween. The Thing #19 continues his wild solo adventures and picking this cover to showcase really inspires me to go back and re-read this series from the start! Ron Wilson was the perfect artist for the series second imo only to John Byrne himself….
Comic Cover of the Week: The HULK vs. The SUPER SKRULL!
Dale Keown has easily just GOT to be one of the greatest Hulk comic book artists of all time-and here’s more proof of that as I’m showcasing issue #375 all the way back from 1990. This is an awesome cover it’s straight to the point-we waited far too long to see The Hulk battle The Super Skrull but here it finally happened. Keown’s art always for some reason reminded me a bit of John Byrne, who’s one of my all time faves but I think Keown’s Hulk is even better. This was an awesome era of the comic that explored some cool new concepts and of course here focused on the grey Hulk. The kid in me still gets so excited to add The Super Skull to the Grey Goliath’s rogue gallery…
The interior art too was no joke-look at how awesome some of these panels are! Dale made sure none of us were disappointed by their battle. I tell you, they just don’t make Hulk art or Hulk battles like they used too…
Coloring Book Cover of the Week: Vintage HULK Smash Crayons!!
I recently ran across these retro late 70s/80s Incredible Hulk coloring book covers and was immediately flushed with memories of being a kid. I owned some of these myself, spending hours coloring the jade giant-it was one of my favorite things to do! I just couldn’t get enough of his adventures. These black and white full page coloring books could be found at the drug stores back in the day-as well as the awesome rotating comic book display stand that I’d rush to when I’d go there with my mom. I’d ALWAYS be on the lookout for The Hulk! I’ve really got some fond memories, especially of the first one pictured. These were the days when The Hulk felt really special to me, long before the MCU us kids didn’t play with tablets and smart phones. We got out the green and purple crayons and went to TOWN!
Comic Cover of the Week: The Most TOTALLY 80s Cover of the 1980s!!
Bill Sienkiewicz just NEVER disappoints (I dare you to try to prove me wrong!) and today here’s the real proof of that-especially if you’re a true fan of 1980s nostalgia. The character of ‘Dazzler’ alone is one of the ultimate superheroes of the era- that’s for sure. She’s always had such cool style & wild fashion so when she was given her own series, Bill Sienkiewicz made sure to give you some of his best freakin’ cover art of his career. Issue #33 from 1984 has just got to be the most totally 80s jam of the decade, a play on Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, this one’s a true masterpiece, ‘Chiller’ features a Dazzler story for comic and pop fanatics alike – check it! I NEED this as a poster on my damn wall!
Comic Book Cover of the Week: Classic ABSORBING MAN Mayhem!
Here’s a true classic comic that’s always been a favorite of mine since I was just a kid-I’ve always adored the cover too, it shows one of The Incredible Hulk’s fiercest villains as a major threat to ol’ Jade Jaws.
The Incredible Hulk #209 has got another perfect cover from Ed Hannigan & Frank Giacoia, featuring Crusher Creel dwarfing The Hulk as he puts him in a stranglehold. It makes me miss those old Hulk stories in a big way and the issue features the two in one of their best battles.
Sometimes I miss the simplicity of comic books from the 70’s & 80s, maybe it’s just nostalgia because I took this comic book with me everywhere I went, like it was an action figure or something. The Absorbing Man is most definitely one of my favorite bad guys in Hulk’s rogue gallery and this was my first intro to the character, the inside drawn by all time BEST Hulk artist Sal Buscema proves once again just why he was the man for the job for soooo many years.
This issue way back from 1977 will always hold a special place in my heart! It’s cover in particular is a potent look at one of the coolest villains of the green goliath….
Comic Cover of the Week: The 5 Minute Bill Sienkiewicz SPIDER-MAN Cover!
Bill Sienkiewicz did it again! Yes this time likely in 5 minutes or less! I’m going to be honest, I’ve never seen this comic book cover until a few days ago but now my curiosity level is through the roof on this 3-part Spidey adventure way back from 1987. Sienkiewicz never disappoints and these three covers are proof- the first one here really does seem like it was likely something he threw together in a few minutes, and it’s still fucking brilliant! Check out the first two covers, it looks like he spent more time on those obviously. This story took place inside of the Kingpin’s insane asylum-and Bill conveys the madness with pure perfection…
