Zero Charisma: Another Tired Stereotypical Nerd Comedy?
I just watched the trailer for the upcoming “Zero Charisma”, a comedy again about D&D. I’ll admit this movie looks like a damn good time, but after thinking about it for a little bit it kinda started to bug me. First check it out:
Looks good huh? Yeah, but really how many more comedies are we going to get about people who either A. LARP or B. Play RPG’s being socially awkward, yet lovable man-children? I think this stereo type had a bit of truth to it like 20 years ago! I know a lot of RPG-ers and none of them still live with their mom. Hell most of them are married or have hot girlfriends / boyfriends! Yeah I get it, it’s a nerdy game, because you’re using you imagination? I find it a lot more stimulating than sitting in front of a tv for hours on end playing X-Box. I think it’s funny too that the “new guy” to the game in the trailer brings a six pack like it’s a big deal! Geez everyone, get over it, these “nerds” have been drinking beer and smoking weed at D&D for decades now! D&D for me often feels like a party and I’ll have you know there’s not a Mountain Dew near anywhere near our battle grid.
So what I’m getting tired of is this continual stereotype in movies ect. about the modern day nerd. Most people that play RPG’s don’t even fit into this bracket. I get that it’s a fun and easy topic to poke at but come on it’s time to recognize that times have changed and you don’t need to be a socially awkward moron to enjoy this type of activity. I think today you find people of all races, social classes and genders enjoy a good game in the world of adult make believe, don’t you?
Don’t Go to Prison! You Won’t Be Able to Play…..D&D?!!
I know, I know what the HELL is this world coming to you ask? Just recently here we get a crazy report in Florida, which isn’t really that surprising, about a naked man eating the face off of another naked man under a bridge and grunting like a zombie. What’s up with that folks? I know I just had to at least address that because it’s pretty much the weirdest thing I’ve heard…well almost ever! Except for this maybe, did you know that if for some weird reason you go to prison and you’re a rpg-er, chances are, won’t ever be able to play Dungeons & Dragons again!!! EVER!
Seriously if I were to some reason get life in the slammer I always thought that at the very least I could play some mad ass D&D!!! Think about it, you get locked up for years or maybe even life and all hope is lost…then you suddenly remember D&D is the perfect game for prison! Hell you could play every day, have countless rad adventures up til your dyin’ day…well no more folks. At least in Wisconsin, my native state, where courts decided in 2010 (which I first heard about now) to ban D&D! According to them it causes gang like behavior! Really?! They also went on to add Dungeons & Dragons could “foster an inmate’s obsession with escaping from the real-life correctional environment, fostering hostility, violence and escape behavior,” prison officials said in court. That could make it more difficult to rehabilitate prisoners and could endanger public safety, they said. They also noted D&D could lead to Continue reading
Truly Un-Epic Hand Lasers Rule!!
So you all are aware of how much I like bad movies? You may be able to tell by my post yesterday how much I enjoy 80’s fantasy movies. So once again I stumble upon a trailer for a movie that I simply have GOT to see. It’s apparently from 1984, made in Indonesia and looks to be the shiniest turd of a film I have yet to lay my eyes upon! Check out the trailer for the most truly un-epic movie of the 80’s!
This movie seems to have it all folks! Terrible fight sequences, completely ridiculous looking special effects, laughably raunchy sex scenes, people who ride on flying rocks and who shoot lasers from their hands! It really doesn’t get any better or worse than this! Today I begin my own hunt for this craptastic gem cuzI feel a bad movie night coming on soon!
LARPERS Gone WILD!!
Ever wonder what might happen if a troop of LARP-ers suddenly went wacko?! Well wonder no more in this new thriller I just saw the trailer for. “The Wild Hunt” follows a crew of live action role players that would make Tom Hanks’ version of Mazes & Monsters look like an afternoon on Sesame Street!
Now keep in mind I haven’t actually seen this Canadian movie yet but I have heard some great things about it. I have also heard that LARP-ers all over the world are taking offense to flick saying that it gives them a bad name! Continue reading
More Norwegian Trolls Please!
Ever since I was a little kid I have had a fascination with Ny Form Trolls! No not the weird mongoloid looking ones with the neon hair, the bad ass ones from Norway! Ny Forms also have “real” hair as well but these ones look the way trolls were meant to. These amazing little sculptures hit the scene in 1964.
Here’s the history of how they came to be via the Trollshop.net:
“Somewhere in the middle of Norway, you will find a small and sparsely
populated mountain village called Tynset. It is located at the foot of a
five thousand feet high mountain Continue reading
August = A Good Month For Power Metal!!
So as you all know the new Iron Maiden album is set to be released this month as you all probably know from me ranting about their live show I witnessed and posting their new song El Dorado. What some metal fans may not know though is that there’s another metal album being released this month that I am equally as pumped about! Blind Guardian’s “At The Edge of Time” is set to be released on August 24th!
If you like power metal with heavy influences of fantasy then you best run out and prepare to play this album during battle in your next D&D campaign! Blind Guardian has been around since 1984 and they just seem to keep getting better! Anyway I found some full songs from the upcoming album posted on youtube so if you’re ready to get epic as shit then you best sit down and take a good listen!!
My Time has Come-Iron Maiden Here I Come!
There comes a time in your life when you really just have to suck it up and fucking rock. That time has finally come for me as I am preparing to see one of the best bands in the whole damn world for the first and possibly last time, IRON MAIDEN. Sure the tickets were quite pricey and having grown up attending punk rock shows I really haven’t been to that many arena shows in my time. I mean I saw some pretty amazing bands back in the day for six bucks or less, bands that went on to sell millions of albums even. Even living here in Portland Oregon it seems most bands are just too damn afraid to turn up their amps and many times I end up at the same old timid artsy shows-never getting 1/10th of the rock needed to survive the real world properly. But now the time has finally come to admit to myself, it’s time to man up, rock for real and see one of the best concerts of a lifetime.
I have wanted to see Maiden live for years, but some how always seemed to put it off because of pricey tickets Continue reading
Dungeon Masters & the Real World…
Finally a movie I can really relate too, The Dungeon Masters! Well, we’ll see I guess, but nonetheless a movie centered around the lives of three Dungeon Masters. I guess this movie is showing what the life is like of those who are completely immersed in the culture and subculture of Dungeons & Dragons. How they deal with the real world and the role their fantasy world plays in their every day living. I know that there are groups of people who play D&D religiously almost every day of the week. People who LARP as well every weekend. I do play D&D though at the moment there is no game we’re playing, I am looking forward to the next adventure. I definately look forward to seeing this movie and seeing how different our lives are or maybe how similar they are. I’m also interested to see the game play of the different Dungeon Masters and what kind of game and environment they produce for their players.
I’d say the groups I have played in have been pretty hardcore. Sometimes we’ve dressed up, we play in the basement by candlelight, Continue reading
Epic D&D with universal dork blogger!!
Hey I had this video up on my myspace page for quite sometime but I thought I would post it here too. I play D&D every Sunday evening and right now I’m currently the DM. This game however I was just a player character. Sometimes we dress up for our games, play by candle light in the basment, all have special voices and we have alot of fun! Here’s a clip from one of our games. Check this out!
Tom Hanks: The Worlds First LARPER!!!
You’d never have guessed that the world’s first Live Action Role Player was Tom Hanks huh? Well it’s true in this 1981 movie Tom Hanks and friends are all amped up while playing a role playing game called “Mazes & Monsters” (sound like any other famous RPG) and decided to take it to the next level by dressing up and taking it into some dangerous caves near campus! What a great idea-I’d be totally down too! Unfortunately things go bad when Hanks starts to become utterly obsessed with the game, seeing monsters(RAD!) and thinking he’s his RPG character in real life(beleive me this is not a bad thing). Man I totally understand, It happens to me all the time!! Check out a few of these scenes from this cult classic that has been called the “Reefer Madness” of D&D!!
This scene is where they get started with this fantastic idea!
