Where Are All The Realistic Comic Book Super Heroes?

I was talking with some friends the other night about something I think is really interesting and kinda depressing in the world of comics books. The topic of realism in super hero comic books. I am not talking realism in a way of superhuman beings roaming the earth, having crazy powers and fighting crime. Nope, you see that’s all more than fine with me. I am rather talking about the fact that it seems almost every super hero or super team seems to have a full cast of beautifully sculpted super models in their ranks. Even worse is the fact that almost every artist draws everyones faces the same-I mean most of the time Bruce Banner is drawn with same face as Reed Richards, Captain America or Cyclops! Kind of a cookie cutter “safe” bland drawing of men or women in comic books. See this has been happening since the beginning of comic books and to be quite honest it’s kinda lame.

I personally would LOVE to see a little more depth and realism in my comic books. Why does every woman have to have the same perfect body?? Doesn’t The Invisible Woman ever eat too many donuts when nobody is looking? Continue reading

Dork Trivia of the Day!!

So here’s a question I have pondered for quite sometime:

Who came first the Man-Thing or Swamp Thing?!

It would seem that one MUST have copied the other, they both are squishy, slimey monsters that roam around in the swamp and they both decided to have their last name be “Thing”….coincidence? I highly doubt it! Well I decided to finally check out exactly who jumped onto the scene first. It appears that Marvel’s Man thing hopped onto the scene a mere  2 months before DC’s Swamp Thing way back in 1971!!

Man-Thing made his first appearance in the May issue of Savage Tales #1 and Swamp Thing jumped onto the scene in the July issue of House of Secrets #92. So even though it seems that Swamp Thing has reaped a lot more success than our buddy Man-Thing we all know who the O.G. swamp monster really was! Thank god I can finally get some rest at night now!!

Phoenix Jones: Seattle’s Finest Super Hero!

Today I just discovered this news story that somehow slipped under my radar and it’s a pretty good one! Now this is the kinda news I can really get behind! Phoenix Jones is not a comic book character, but the Northwests finest real life super hero.

Unlike almost all other “real life super heroes” that mostly just walk around in a costume and hand out food to homeless people (which is admirable) Jones actually fights crime! He’s been on the news now several times, had guns pulled on him, been stabbed, beaten up and actually stopped crimes from happening! check this out…

Bendis, Maleev and Moon Knight!

Today the brand new debut issue of Moon Knight came out and I have got to say I set my expectations pretty high. What I have been hoping for here is that lightning will strike twice-meaning Bendis and Maleev will bring to Moon Knight what they did for Daredevil years ago. Let me start by saying the Bendis / Maleev run on Daredevil was one of the best reads I have ever had on a comic book. It was easily one of the most consistently great ones at the very least.

Now however Bendis, who lives right around the corner from my store here in Portland Oregon, has become less than impressive in my opinion in the world of comic books as of late. However Continue reading

Guillermo Del Toro to Remake The Swamp Thing?

Well no actually, but wouldn’t that be awesome?!? It occured to me last night as I threw in Wes “Scre4m” Craven’s Swamp Thing last night before I hit the sack that there are some movies that I’d welcome a remake for provided they have the right director attached-Swamp thing is one such movie.

That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy the ridiculous vibe of the original Swamp thing or even the more campy (if you can believe that) Swamp Thing 2 Continue reading

The 1980 Incredible Hulk Portfolio Must be Mine Again!

Way back in 1980 I had the coolest pictures of the Hulk ever! They came in the Marvel Super Hero Portfolio collection and one of the collections was based entirely on ol’ jade jaws himself!! I just ran across these on Ebay while searching for vintage super hero t-shirts and stuff and it was like a blast back in time!

So naturally it’s bidding time and actually they are not pricey at all. I thought I’d share these amazing pics here for anyone who’s never seen these awesome painting by Fastner & Larsen who also did an amazing Spider-Mna portfolio as well! Check these bad boys out!

Comic Book Cover of the Week! It’s Miller Time!

So this weeks cover is one of my faves drawn by Thing artist extraordinaire Ron Wilson-I always love comic book story lines that really show superheroes on their time off. This particular issue has an amazing cover that simply shows the Thing gettin’ wasted at the local dive bar with none other than the Sandman! This was an unusual pairing at the time to have The Thing “teaming up” with a villain but it seems that after this issue in which the Sandman contemplates his life’s direction and tells his complete origin to Ben Grimm, that the two seem to have a friendship that forms that will lead them once again to drink beer together in yet another later issue (the next time will be in a hospital room). It’s simple comic book story lines that I feel are missed greatly in the comics of today-If you’re looking for a great simple and fun back issue to check out Marvel Two in One #88 from 1982-just make sure to crack open a cold one when reading!

Comic Book Cover of the Week!

I am going to start posting some of my all time favorite comic book covers right here every week. Some will be old some new but all the covers will be totally rad. This first one is a classic and I’m sure it’s on everyone’s list of greatest covers already but really this one from the 80’s can’t be posted enough. It’s during a classic storyline involving the Brood-and this cover by Mark Silvestri (X-men 234) is one of the best X-men images of all time…Stay tuned for some more well known and forgotten comic book cover classics!!

Who Said New Horror Movies Suck?? Doghouse Delivers the Goods!

I just finished viewing a great horror comedy that was just released this week on dvd for everyone’s Halloween viewing pleasure. ‘Doghouse’ is little a British film that certainly delivers the laughs and gore a’plenty-ala Shaun of the Dead and Severance. The plot is simple, nine middle aged men set off for a weekend of drunken mayhem to a little village in the middle of the woods called ‘Moodley’ where apparently the females outnumber the males four to one. What they arrive to however is a bit more mayhem than they bargained for as it seems this little resting place turns out to be filled with psychotic mutated she-beasts!

That’s pretty much it folks, if you have short attention span and feel like drinkin’ a few beers this halloween with your fellow fiends you best put this little gem high up on your list of movies to see. Continue reading
