John Byrne teaches you how to draw The THING!

I was just reading a few back issues today preparing to do some “Back Issue Gold” blogs in the next couple days and ran across this awesome feature in the back of The THING #5 from 1983 that I totally forgot about. It’s an awesome “How to Draw the Thing” by the BEST Thing artist ever Mr. John Byrne. When I was a kid I actually used this to help draw some of the many pictures of the Thing I did. I am a huge fan of the Thing’s solo series John Byrne wrote in the 80’s and though he didn’t draw it he was kind enough to give us the scoop on how we could draw ol’ Ben Grimm correctly. So everyone get out your pencils and get ready to sketch and learn from the master-nobody can draw the Thing quite like Mr. Byrne!

You want more Byrne? Check it out!

Sam Raimi leaves Spider-Man 4 and I’m fine with it!

It seems that everyone is losing their damn minds over the recent news that Sam Raimi is no longer directing Spider-man 4, Tobey Maguire is no longer Peter Parker and they’ve decided now to reboot the franchise entirely. Personally I’m pretty excited about this news! I think it’s definately time to give someone else a shot at Spider-man. The way I see it is it’s like a different writer and artist taking over a comic book title. The more I think about it, the more I think that these last three Spider-man movies really weren’t all that great.

I will admit I really enjoyed the first half of the first movie. I think they did a great job with his origin. Then the second half hits with a slaughter of perhaps one of the greatest super villains in comics. Continue reading

Watch Captain America now!

Well I found that the Captain America movie can be viewed online for free! No not the new one but the old one from 1990!!! No this isn’t the best film ever, infact it kinda sucks, but it’s alot of fun anyway. It’s also quite a tough movie to track down so in the meantime while we’re all wondering who’s going to be the next movie Cap we can all take a look at the this version and see that an improvement on it shouldn’t be too hard to pull off!

Check it out here in it’s entirely!

Bryan Singer back to Direct X-MEN!!

I just read some fantastic news, It seems Bryan Singer WILL be returning to the X-men movie franchise! I just read an article on Cinematical.com that Singer is planning on directing X-men “Origins: First Class” which will follow the early days of original movie X-men, Cyclops, Beast, Storm and Jean Grey. I think this is an excellent idea though part of me wishes he would have jumped on board for the next Wolverine movie which I’m sure now will be another major dud.

I guess then this would be a whole new casting call for the younger versions of the X-men. Continue reading

John Malkovich as the Vulture?

The rumors are flying around Spider-man 4’s choice of villains. Not long ago it seemed a sure bet that it would indeed finally be Dylan Baker who has played Doc Connors in the films finally transforming into the Lizard. Seems like the logical choice doesn’t it? Well now word on the street now from Movieline.com is that John Malkovich is being considered for the role of The Vulture.

Doctor Octopus: One of the Hulk’s Only Real Villains in the 80’s?!

I am not sure how familiar you are with the 80’s Incredible Hulk cartoon but when I acquired the all the episides finally on a bootleg DVD (they still haven’t officially released them yet-lame!) I realized the show lacked one thing greatly. Villains!! Now don’t get me wrong the ’82 Hulk show was probably my favorite saturday morning cartoon. I lived for this show! But even back then I wondered where the Abomination was?  The Rhino? The Wendigo? The Bi Beast? Zzzax? The U-Foes? Tyrannus? The Absorbing Man dammit?!!! No where to be found. In fact there was rarely ever a  real Hulk villain on the show at all! Except one for one episode featuring The Leader, there weren’t any of the Hulks comic book baddies anywhere in sight. For some reason they chose Doctor Octopus and a few others oddly to fill in the void of villains for ‘ol  jade jaws!

Scarlett’s Widow revealed..

I just saw the new pics from the Iron Man movie that were just released but there was only one that was of any real excitement. We’ve all seen pics of Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Mickey Rourke as Whiplash so naturally it was pretty cool to see Scarlett Johansson  as The Black Widow. It looks like they got her classic look right which I guess isn’t too hard since she just has to have some guns, red hair and leather body suit. But still you never know with Hollywood these days-I mean they couldn’t even get Wolverine’s claws to look right in the last movie! Check this out…

Iron Man & War Machine Arrive…

I looks like War Machine will be in the new Iron man sequel. I guess Terrence Howard really does have something to be upset about! It seems Don Cheadle got lucky as the Iron Man 2 poster which was just unveiled today at Yahoo Movies shows Iron Man and War Machine back to back. Personally I get pretty annoyed when sequels arrive with new actors replacing others from the previous movies. Since Terrence Howard will always hold a special place in my heart for his perfromance in Hustle & Flow, one of the best movies ever, I am still a bit annoyed he was replaced. Either way we’ll see how Iron Man 2 turns out so far it’s looking like a pretty decent follow up to a movie that I had originally had pretty low expectations for. Lets hope Iron Man 2 lives up to all the hype…

Cartoons Dorks Should Be Watching #1: Ben 10

Thanks for joining Universal Dork for issue #1 of our ‘toons you should sure as hell be watching. For this kick off I want to mention a ’toon that is popular with kids but I quickly overlooked. Fortunately, I am a big enough dork to watch any cartoon I can get my eyes on while working out early in the morning. Well I was blessed to have repeats of Ben 10 showing at the crack of down while sweating it up…and I found it was full of many pleasant surprises. As usual, I encourage you to follow the jump for all of the essential information and this unlikely superhero youth!

Out of the Microverse and to the Big Screen…Abrams Looking at The Micronauts

From Lost, to the new Star Trek…JJ Abrams keeps bringing the goods and I for one am happy that a fresh face in Hollywood is able to remake/reimagine and create originals that continue to stir fans crazy. Although I was not a huge fan of Cloverfield, I loved the fact that it was a fresh and original take on the older big ass monster attach genre. So keep the fans guessing, it appears that Abrams is in negotiations to bring a bit of an offbeat but classic comic, The Micronauts, to the silver screen (make sure to check this link, a great site dedicated to the Micronauts!).
