It seems that everyone is losing their damn minds over the recent news that Sam Raimi is no longer directing Spider-man 4, Tobey Maguire is no longer Peter Parker and they’ve decided now to reboot the franchise entirely. Personally I’m pretty excited about this news! I think it’s definately time to give someone else a shot at Spider-man. The way I see it is it’s like a different writer and artist taking over a comic book title. The more I think about it, the more I think that these last three Spider-man movies really weren’t all that great.
I will admit I really enjoyed the first half of the first movie. I think they did a great job with his origin. Then the second half hits with a slaughter of perhaps one of the greatest super villains in comics. The Green Goblin (pictured below if you all forgot how awesome he’s supposed to look) had the right actor but they completely destroyed him by making him look like the seventh member of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! Was that the best Sam could do with the Green Goblin having directed the Evil Dead trilogy?!! Aside from that and an overuse of rubbery looking cg superhero battles I was severely disappointed.
Spider-man 2 was better though I must admit. They got the villain down pretty damn well that time and the movie as a whole just seemed much more solid and even the effects looked a bit more realistic improving the cg a little more as well. It seemed that things were on the up for the webslingers movie career. Then came the stinking turd that was Spider-man 3.
Yeah Spider-man 3 sealed the deal for me. This should be Raimi’s last Spider-man movie. Spider-man 3 is almost unwatchable. The movie had too many villains (though a great looking Sandman), some pretty bad acting and a horrible movie version of Eddie Brock and Venom. It also had that terrible musical dance sequence. Plus to make matters worse Sam gets another chance to do the Green Goblin right and we get James Franco on a flying snowboard. Oh yeah and if you’re gonna do the black Spider-man costume make it look like the black Spider-man costume! What a waste. I don’t think I need to sell anyone on how much the third one sucked.
So why not a new beginning for Spider-man? Personally Tobey was kinda wearing on me towards the end anyway as Peter Parker. I see a good opportunity to tell some new stories and give it a fresh start. I have heard rumors as well that it will be based on Peter Parker in high school much like the original comic book series of the early 1960’s. Hopefully it will be an improvement, not a re-telling of the origin and not a terrible teen movie but I’m really not holding my breath. However I feel that some of these superhero movies do deserve reboots even if they were only recently released. The Hulk got one and it turned out a helluva lot better than Ang Lee’s piece of garbage. I hear that Daredevil and the Fantastic Four will be getting proper second and third chances too. Thank god for that-Daredevil should have been amazing . I don’t care how many times they have to do a superhero movie to get it right as long as they eventually get it….
