If the Collector Calls…it’s gonna be Bad News!

So, The Collector…saw it this weekend and here are my thoughts…

When approaching the theater, I had to remind myself that The Collector was written and directed by Marcus Dunstan. Dunstan has written Saw IV, V, and the upcoming VI (personally, the world could have done without II-V). In the case of The Collector, I really did not want to see new Jigsaw killer, torture scenes, horrendous blood via wild and impractical contraptions, etc., but rather something that would show Dunstan can do different styles of horror. After all, this was his first attempt at directing, perhaps a desire to differentiate himself. Dunstan also has other “interesting” credentials…for instance he was the writer of the Feast movies (again a trilogy that was just fine being one movie, and was a great movie I might add). So, I erased my expectations and ventured forth into the dark confines of my new home for the 85 minute run time.

Great News For The Alien!

It has recently come to my attention that they are making another “Alien” movie! Yeah I know what you are all thinking-what movie franchises are they NOT remaking or making a sequel for? Well this new Alien will not be a remake but a prequel. Ok well if that is not cool enough how about the fact that Ridley Scott who directed the very first Alien is on board to direct?! Yeah it’s true and I really think this is the way to go with these sequels that are beginning to pop up all over movie land. The movies plot according to Bloodydisgusting.com  so far goes like this:

Death Metal, a Catholic Priest, Tv Guru & Satan’s son….

What? You’ve never seen “The Day of the Beast” before? I recently rewatched this awesome quirky spanish horror comedy and it was just as good as the first time! This movie from 1995 was directed by Alex De La Iglesia and is just a plain fun as hell time. The plot is simple. Father Cura discovers that the antichrist will be born on Christmas Eve and sets out on a mission to stop it it from happening. He also decides that in order to make contact and become closer with the devil he must commit as many sins as he can within the next 24 hours . But this priest can’t do it alone. He employs the help of a self proclaimed satan worshipin’ death metal head record store clerk named Jose Maria and the dark sleezy tv psychic guru named Cavan.

Castlevania the Movie!

Let me first start of by saying that Castlevania was probably the BEST game EVER for the  NES! There were obviously some other really good ones but I will have to say this game pretty much blew my damn mind as a kid! I was the first one to beat the damn game too of any kid or teen in my whole neighborhood! My friend Dave Park (My NES partner in crime back then) and I liked it sooo much that when I beat it we were recording the final battle I had with Dracula on a VHS tape! Yeah you could do that back then. I almost lost my mind when I beat Dracula and then he suddenly turned into that HUGE white demon-then I had to kick it’s ass too! Anyway you can tell it was pretty epic for me and I still think I am some kinda video game hotshot still because of that.

Well it turns out that they are making a “Castlevania” movie now. I am not sure about you but I don’t think that video game movies have ever turned out that good. I guess Resident Evil had some promise but really these movies end up to be clunkers. Unless this movie has all the camera angles from the side view and all the bosses from the original game it just might as well not be made! The Simon Belmont  better have a whip, some crosses and big jugs of  holy water to toss too.  Ok I admit maybe I am being a little too picky.

The Undirectable Klaus Kinski!

I recently rewatched “Crawlspace”,  the 1986 slasher classic about a derranged nazi landlord who only rents rooms to cute girls and then spies on them through heating ducts in the building. Oh yeah he also likes to torture and kill them in the attic. I remember always seeing this the cover of this movie in the video store when I was a kid and the guy’s face always freaked me out a bit. Well there was a reason for that, because the movie’s star, cult hero, Klaus Kinski was out of his damn mind!

1987’s “The Nest” Delivered!

I find some bad ass VHS tapes at the Goodwill Bins here in Portland Oregon! A ton of cheezy awesome wretched horror flicks are always coming my way. From Roger Corman’s Concorde Pictures comes “The Nest”  which was one of my most recent finds and it was pretty bad in a very good way! Set in a quiet town of North Port, the citizens there encounter a serious roach problem which is only about to get worse! That’s when the cool guy Sherrif Tarbell enters the picture with suspisions that the town’s mayor is in ca-hoots with an evil genetics corporation called INTEC  who’s secretly experimenting with roaches and trying to hybridize them with other animals and yeah you guessed it humans!!

SCREAM 4 Anyone?

So it has been officially confirmed recently that “Scream 4” is indeed in the works rather than a remake of the original (thank god!). The good news is also that yesterday David Arquette and Courtney Cox have also officially signed on to return as Dewey Riley & Gale Weathers. I’d like to also mention that about 8 years ago I met them both by chance at a Wherehouse Music where I worked in Jacksonville Florida and they were actually pretty cool people with pretty decent taste in music. Anyway I have always been a big fan of the Scream movies. Infact I remember seeing the first one in the theater and being pretty blown away. Scream gave the horror genre the kick in the ass it needed at the time, making going to see a horror movie in the theaters a damn fun time again. It also set the trend however to a ton of immitators that made going to the theater to see a horror movie a collossal waste of time and money!

Who was your Horror host?

Back in the 80’s when I was a kid living in the Fox Valley Wisconsin there was one show every weekend I was sure NOT to miss-Chiller Theater! This was an awesome show that showed some pretty terrible horror movies from the 60’s and 70’s mostly and if you were lucky maybe one from the 80’s occasionally. It was a local broadcast out of Green Bay Wisconsin and it’s host was none other than “Ned The Dead”.

I am not exactly sure why good ol’ Ned entered my mind this morning but just the thought of him brings back alot of great memories from my youth. I found some segements of him on youtube and then the memories really flushed back! Just the sound of his voice, his manic laughter and the sight of him in his broken down ticket booth was enough to put a smile on my face today. I wonder where these type of guys are now today? I heard Rumours that he’s back on TV in Wisconsin? Why doesn’t Portland have a “Chiller Theater”?  That is something that needs to change! Anyway it got me thinking about other areas of the country and anyone who checks this site-who were your local Horror Hosts?!

Ghostbusters 3: new Harold Ramis interview!

Her’s a great interview with Harold Ramis talking about the upcoming “Ghostbusters 3” movie! Yeah it really is happening and it sounds from the interview that he has a good grasp on what has and hasn’t worked in recent revival movies. I guess we will have to wait and see but I think from his perspective on things it’s going to be done tastefully. In a world jam packed with terrible CG it seems that maybe this new Ghostbusters flick may end up having hopefully a bit more of an organic old school feel. Check this out!
