HIGLEY : Re-Mastering Old Skool Pop Punk!

I love old pop punk! Especially the stuff from the late 1980’s and early 90’s like The Descendents/ALL, Big Drill Car, Chemical People, The Hard-ons & The Doughboys. I’ve posted here several times about the upcoming Descendents documentary “Filmage” and just how excited I am to see it finally released. So naturally I am super stoked on Higley, who just released their first two songs to the public last week!

I know, I know who the fuck is Higley?! Well it just so happens to be some people from a couple of my favorite pop punk bands of all time namely Kevin Carl & Duane Keiner of G-Whiz along with Bill Stevenson of Descendents / ALL & Black Flag. G-Whiz has been a fave of since the early 1990’s and I’d go on record to say that they’re one of the best pop punk bands of that era hailing from Tempe Arizona. My old punk band King Friday had a split record with them back in the day and currently I have an EP’s worth of material recorded with Kevin Carl for our long distance band The Davis Baby. Higley however has been a work in progress for Carl who recorded the tracks years ago with Bill Stevenson at the Blasting Room (Stevenson’s studio) in Fort Collins Colorado. However the songs had been demo’d with several singers over the years (the first I am told had Stevenson on vocals) but finally found the perfect fit in Kris Roe, known better for his band The Ataris.

Some might want to call this a super group but at it’s core it’s the baby of Carl who wrote all of the material with a little help from his friends to execute it. What we have here are two new songs, the first of many that are already recorded (I have heard eight more tracks, without vocals yet) that will become the bands first full album. Check these out below, if you’re a fan of any of the groups I mentioned you’re sure to love this. If you like what you hear go buy the songs on their bandcamp page as it will help get the full album out of the studio and into our ears….

Universal Dork : The Song!

So I could go on on on and on about all the multi million dollar movies out there and hype them up even more, or talk mad shit on them til the cows come home-but really do they need anymore people promoting their shit for them? I think not. Instead though I am going to hype up my new song I wrote with Ensly Mogul my spacehall nerdcore partner in crime. In fact he was an original contributor here on Universal Dork and from time to time used to post here. I have been releasing nerdcore dance hall for years and just recently started up writing new jams and rehearsing with Mogul for live shows.

Anyway we just recently put the finishing touches on this one, which is a nerdcore mix of hip hop, reggae spacehall bursting with dork rhymes galore. This is the second track we’ve released and it will be part of our upcoming full length album – dorks unite and please help us spread the word and let us know what you think so far!

The Newest Worst Song EVER!

It’s been days since I have heard the sneak peek snippet from the upcoming Lou Reed / Metallica collaboration album titled LULU. I have gotta say WOW….WOW..this could be one of the WORST songs of all time!!! Seriously I would put this track called “The View” up against pretty much any  of the most wretched songs out there and I am certain without a doubt that it would win over and over again! This song makes Rebecca Black’s song “Friday” sound like it should be nominated for a Grammy award!! It’s quite an accomplishment to come up with music this harmful to the ears and brain. Now there is a 90 second clip out there to hear-it doesn’t get any better folks but it is one of the most funny things I have heard in a while-they can’t be serious?

Yeah the New Devo Rocks….

So yesterday the new Devo album was released and it’s pretty rad. Their first album in 20 years, “Something For Everybody” sounds like they picked up exactly where they left off in the 80’s!

If you still aren’t convinced check out these vids and I’m sure you’ll be picking up the album immediately. Devo has always been a dork’s dream band and they continue to be in 2010!

My Time has Come-Iron Maiden Here I Come!

There comes a time in your life when you really just have to suck it up and fucking rock. That time has finally come for me as I am preparing to see one of the best bands in the whole damn world for the first and possibly last time, IRON MAIDEN. Sure the tickets were quite pricey and having grown up attending punk rock shows I really haven’t been to that many arena shows in my time. I mean I saw some pretty amazing bands back in the day for six bucks or less, bands that went on to sell millions of albums even. Even living here in Portland Oregon it seems most bands are just too damn afraid to turn up their amps and many times I end up at the same old timid artsy shows-never getting 1/10th of the rock needed to survive the real world properly. But now the time has finally come to admit to myself, it’s time to man up, rock for real and see one of the best concerts of a lifetime.

I have wanted to see Maiden live for years, but some how always seemed to put it off because of pricey tickets Continue reading
