Universal Dork’s Rad New Comic Book Picks!

It’s tough sometimes finding cool new comic books to check out! Sometimes (more often lately it seems) the two big cheezes, Marvel & DC just don’t float my boat! It’s a shame because I’m a superhero guy at heart and not getting that fix can certainly be depressing. So these days with somewhat limited resources I’ve been picking up a few cool new and ongoing titles that thus far seem real promising! So here’s a few that I’ve been diggin’ lately:

manifestdestiny

Manifest Destiny (Image/Skybound): The third issue of this series just dropped this week and so far it’s a ton of fun! It’s a period piece retelling the expedition of Lewis & Clark with a even more adventure and yeah some creepy run ins with native monsters! They inject some great horror into this historical journey and have created some memorable characters to boot. The artwork too is pretty damn impressive as well and thus far I’m fully on board, I think this could quite possibly fill the void in my life that The Walking Dead has left with it’s recent more & more tired storytelling. Check it out!

curse

Curse (Boom! Studios): Just picked up the first issue of this cool (so far) horror comic! It’s being called a werewolf story, but I’m still guessing it could be based on the Wendigo mythology. We’ll see I guess. Either way it’s got some fantastic gritty artwork and an intriguing story about a down on his luck single father who decides to try to collect reward money by hunting down a killer in the woods to pay for his dying sons doctor bills. What he encounters is even more than he originally bargained for! So far this four issue limited series looks totally promising!

bprdhellonearth115

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth (Dark Horse): This comic book is probably my favorite these days and has really compelled me to go back and collect all the trades to read from start to finish. The recent story line is as always jam packed with monsters and as always incredibly unique art. Issue #115 find the BPRD teaming up with Russian Special Science Services (the Russian version of BPRD) as they travel on foot through a desolated Manhattan landscape looking for survivors of a recent Monster attack on the city and the cause of it all. This current arc is awesome and we’ve now finally got Liz Sherman back ready to kick monster ass with her recently renewed fire power! I only hope that Abe Sapien makes his way back to the team! If you don’t read this series you’re missing out!

guerillas

Guerrillas (Oni Press): This series isn’t new, but it’s new to me and I love it so far! Written and fantastically drawn by Brahm Revel this kick ass little adventure set in the Vietnam War follows Private John Francis Clayton on his first tour of duty. Unsure of himself and deathly afraid of combat finds himself alone in the jungles after his platoon is slaughtered by the enemy. It’s not long though until he runs into a strange platoon of chain smoking chimps armed for combat dressed in full on army fatigues. Sounds almost like a comedy? Not chance this one is played out serious and the story becomes more intriguing with every turn of the page. Thus far there’s two trades out and they’re a hell of a lot of fun. Right now Mr. Revel is working on Marvel Knights: X-men which so far is great. However he told me himself that we can expect the next chapter of Guerrillas to unfold in 2014! So check it out before the third act hits!

Frankenstein’s Army: The Coolest Horror Flick of 2013?!

Do you like cool monster movies as much as I do? If so Frankenstein’s Army looks like a total winner here in this most recent preview just released yesterday! I’m big fan of World War II horror movies and this one could shape up to be one of the best ones yet. To me this movie is looking like a great BPRD story arc filled to the brim with insane Nazi monster soldiers.

It appears that the Nazi’s have their own Doctor Frankenstein that’s constructing creatures with some pretty menacing weaponry melded to their bodies. The trailer is jam packed with action gore and some pretty outstanding fx.

I also read a pretty stellar review on BloodyDisgusting.com so this one is going to the top of my “to see list” pretty rapidly. Opening in select theaters July 26th I’m crossing my fingers this one hits a theater in Portland! Check this shit out!

Comic Book Cover of the Week! Mignola & The Hulk!

This awesome cover for The Incredible Hulk # 302 which debuted in December of 1984 and is beautifully illustrated by Mike Mignola. It’s from a great Hulk story arc where he is banished to “The Crossroads”, a strange dream-like world in another dimension, which Doctor Strange exiles him to for quite a few issues. You see right around this time The Hulk was causing the world a lot of trouble. Shortly before this however The Hulk inherited Banners brain and was “free” of the monster. Hell he was even asked to join The Avengers again! However it didn’t take long before the monster took full control again and The Hulk became a near mindless monster entirely.

During his time in The Crossroads The Hulk traveled to many strange places, this particular issue he arrived in a bizarre midieval kingdom where there was race of brutal red skinned knights rule the land and as The Hulk learns early on he is no match for their strength. This is a great story as The savage Hulk learns what it feels like to no longer be the strongest one there is. The Hulk gets his ass kicked bad multiple times here like never before.

It also features a green skinned maiden who’s tears turn to flowers who I think may remind Hulk of his old flame Jarella.Oh yeah and no one speaks english so it’s pretty neat as it’s based on the art and some minor narration. Check out these great Crossroad Hulk adventures they’re actually pretty awesome and heartfelt. Also you get some amazing covers by Hellboy’s own Mike Mignola-which is quite special if you’re a Hulk fanatic!

Can’t Wait For Machete 2? Check Out “BAD ASS”!

It makes me so very happy that at 68 years old Danny Trejo is finally getting the respect he deserves! He really hit the top thanks to Robert Rodriguez finally casting him in his most iconic role yet “Machete”. Now I also want to take this opportunity to ask Rodriguez what the hell he was thinking when he cast Adrien Brody as the lead in Predators? Think how more awesome that movie would have been had Trejo been cast as the lead instead of a side character that gets disposed of early on in the film. Hell I think it could’ve rivaled Arnold’s role!

So anyway I wanted to recommend a new Trejo film where he takes the front and center. “Bad Ass” was just released to DVD and it’s a helluva lotta fun! Now it’s no where near as epic as Machete but it does play as more of an awesome 1980’s style action flick. The story is very very loosely based on true events. This movie tells the story of a Veitnam vet who stands up for an elderly man (Trejo is considered a senior citizen also, the movie’s tag line is “They just messed with the wrong Senior Citizen” ) on the bus from two nasty foul mouthed neo-nazi’s. By stands up I mean, kicks ASS. Someone records it with their phone and Trejo soon is an internet sensation. This begins a string of events that pushes him, or should I say “Bad Ass”, as he is renamed that sets this vet on a rampage of full on butt kicking for the movies duration.

Yeah this movie is cheezy as hell and it knows it. It’s got a ton of great one liners, a high speed bus chase, Ron Perlman as a crooked mayor and lots of drinkin’ between the action scenes by Trejo. Hell Danny pretty much puts everyone in place in this one. Everything about this one a throwback to films like Commando & Rambo. It’s a bunch of dumb fun and a delight seeing Trejo deliver an ass whooping again and again…

More Mignola Cartoons Please!!

For those of you cartoon lovers out there I wanted to make sure that none of you missed “The Amazing Screw-on Head” from 2006. Based off of a Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame, one shot comic book of the same name from 2002. This single episode was the pilot for what was hoped to be a Sci-Fi channel original series. For whatever reason it was not picked up and we are left simply with this 22 minute episode full of brilliant animation, awesome quirky characters and a ton of action! I love Mignola and weekly read his comics and if there were more cartoons out there like this one the world would be a much better place!

Screw-on Head is the occult robot investigator of Abe Lincoln (this ass wipe again?! don’t get me started!) who can screw his head on and off into different bodies. He then follows Lincoln’s orders to fight zombies werewolves and whatever else goes bump in the night-kinda like a prequel to BPRD. The pilot had a survey to get peoples reactions, apparently it was too out there for the masses. It even had a star studded cast of Paul Giamatti, Patton Oswalt, Molly Shannon & David Hyde Pierce. What more could you ask for people? Well anyway if like rad cartoons and have never seen this check it out – you won’t be disappointed as it looks exactly like Mignola’s artwork has jumped off of the page of one of his comics!!

Mister Saturday’s TOP 10 HORROR Flicks of 2008!

Hey it’s time to look back on all of the horror films i saw in theatres or released on dvd in 2008 and decide which ones were the coolest! Keep in mind i have not yet seen “Let the Right One In” yet or “Splinter” which i hear were pretty rad-so it’s very possible those could enter the top 10. So let’s get down to business!!!

10. The Cottage: This was a surprisingly great horror comedy starring Andy Serkis (LOTR’s Golem). A cool gory fast paced tale of 2 criminals buffoons who kidnap the daughter of an underground kingpin holding her for ransom in a cottage in the farmland. What ensues is a comedic bloodbath when they realize they’re tresspassing on a hulking mutated rednecks land. Fans of “Shaun of the Dead” and “Severance” will be all over this one. A fun gory romp!
