Is Mark Hamill Just Too Damn OLD for Star Wars Episode VII?!

Sorry folks I had computer problems for the whole last week and wasn’t able to effectively blog unless blogging from a smart phone sounds fun? Anyway I kinda missed reporting my thoughts on the whole Star Wars future trilogy / Disney fiasco. So first let me say I think it’s a great thing that we finally got Star Wars away from Lucas. Sorry George! I also think this will mean BETTER films for the franchise. The prequels can’t be erased from our minds sadly but maybe we can tarnish off the shit that has been coating Star Wars and get something truly amazing that the fans will lose their god damn minds over. I have a feeling that is exactly what we’ll get. In fact I think a great director will be chosen and like J.J. Abrams did for Star Trek this director will do similars wonders for Star Wars.

So today I want to address the fact that we are getting major speculation that Episode Seven will feature possibly Luke Skywalker, Leia and Han Solo. They won’t be casting new actors, they will be including Hamill, Fisher and Ford. I’ve already heard people bitching about this idea, calling them too old to carry a movie. Quite possibly this really could be the case. I however think that with a few younger cast members the movie could be rounded out perfectly and capture the nostalgia for longtime fans and younger fans alike. My real focus here though is on Luke Skywalker. I feel Episode Seven must feature Hamill as Luke, much like the way the last Star Trek movie featured Nimoy as Spock. However I’d like to see Luke as a major player in the movie rather than a cameo, maybe not first billed but a great supporting part played. So let’s cut the small talk and get to the point is he too old for the role?

That’s what I hear people saying, however one thing that has been a constant theme in Star Wars is one simple fact. A Jedi is dangerous, but and OLD Jedi is the most lethal and deadly of them all. Obi-Wan, Yoda, Vader, Dooku? Need I go on?

So this makes perfect sense to me to have Mark Hamill return as an older Jedi. I mean I almost wish Hamill was even older for the role. I imagine him training someone in the Jedi Ways and having to fight along side his student/students against whatever threat is chosen for the next film. I’d also agree that Hamill would have to take this role very seriously, I mean he better be running on the damn treadmill as I type this. All we need is him to get back into shape, he can look old as shit but he’s got to look like he can still kick some major butt with a lightsaber. I also think it could possibly end up being the most bad ass Skywalker role yet if done tastefully. I think it’s a must, it would tie the films together and make a lot of sense. Now Harrison Ford & Carrie Fisher? I’m not so certain about. What I do know is these movies cannot possibly be worse than the prequels, so whatever we get will seem like a god damn Academy Award winner next to the last few films. One thing to seriously consider is who else could return form the past for these movies? Bring ’em on Disney!

Asia’s Answer to Snow White…Oh & Superman Too!

I was watching some old cartoons today starting out with some of the awesome Max Fleischer animated Superman stuff. I hadn’t even realized that the animation was based on rotoscoping, which is essentially tracing over real actors to get the smooth real life movements into cartoon form. That explains a lot as to why those Superman cartoons feel so damn special. I knew that technique was employed by Ralph Bakshi for many of his films but had no idea that Fleischer was the originator of that style. Shows how much I know huh?

Well this also lead me to another amazing cartoon, Princess Iron Fan which was Asia’s first feature length animated film. They too used the rotoscope style of animation back in 1941.

What we get as a result is one truly breath taking little film. Directly influenced by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the films directors, The Wan Brothers tried to rival it with this Chinese epic. Check it out…

Later in 1966 we got this awesome live action version-Amazing!!

Recent DVD Scores!

Every now and then I come across a movie I am just flat out stoked about finding on dvd! Sometimes they’re even movies I’ve completely forgotten existed. Well one such recent score is the absolutley brilliant and yet somehow underated fantasy 80’s adventure “Return to Oz”. This is a classic and just a downright entertaining film with some amazing sets, visuals and plenty of creepy monsters to keep your eyes glued to the screen.

Perhaps that’s why many people have never seen this movie-as in 1985 it was listed on Siskel & Ebert’s “worst of” list and was described as being too intense and dark for children. How ever it did receive an academy award nomination for “best visual effects”.If you get a chance I highly recommend revisting this movie as it’s a real treat to anyone craving a good fantasy flick and if you haven’t ever seen this you need to check it out immediately! I’m pretty glad I now own this one on dvd…

Tron 2 Plot Revealed!

Ok well at least it’s not a remake but an actual sequel! Yeah there’s been some info released by Disney on the Tron 2: Legacy storyline and so far it sounds pretty fun plus it even has Jeff Bridges reprising his role. I know, does Tron really need a sequel? Well I guess the answer is yes. I did have fond memories of that movie as a kid and also got many hours of enjoyment from playing the video game back in the day! Now if only video games were as cool as they were back in the 80’s right? I know some people would beg to differ but really I just don’t have time these days to learn 100 different moves and work 15 different buttons on a controller. Whatever happened to video games that had like one knobby controller or a roller ball and a button?!! Something you could learn to play in a few minutes! Either way this will be one movie where the CG will be welcomed with open arms!! Check out the plot line below…

Disney to Buy Marvel Entertainment…? Who da thunk it?

Well, I am sure all of you up to date dorks out there have heard the big buzz…Disney to buy Marvel Comics…for a mere $4 Billion! When I first got the news that it looked like things were official, I have a wave of different emotions. First, joy, think of Marvel with that type of dollar backing and resources. Think of the animated films with the Pixar studios at its disposal. The sky is the limits when you have that deep of pockets…wow think of all the great Marvel movies to come out of this relationship. Marvel motion picture releases could go on forever! Second, fear, what if there are some really weird demands that Disney makes on Marvel. What if they get behind the wheel of the Marvel van and drive it like a drunken 90 year old grandma on roids…crap. Lastly, calm, Disney is a large company with vision. They have seen what is possible with Marvel and I have to rest my weary head on common sense.

What do you think will come of this new found friendship?

Tim Burton’s Alice in wonderland…..

Well as you may or may not already know Tim Burton is attempting to tackle Alice In Wonderland and guess what? It stars Johnny Depp. Thankfully Burton has decided NOT to cast him as Alice though I am sure that he was considering it at some point! I am really wondering if he is going to be able to pull this one off. I hope to god it’s nothing like his absolutely wretched remake of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” or his completely lame version of the sci-fi classic “Planet Of The Apes”. We’ll see where he takes this one but so far the still look pretty breathtaking …
