Sherlock Holmes : The Dufus!

I finally got around to check out the latest Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr. and it was exactly what I thought it was going to be,a dumb fun romp of a movie. No surprises really there I enjoyed it quite a bit like the first installment however this Guy Ritchie Sherlock was COMPLETELY different than any Sherlock that we’ve ever seen or known of. This confused some and made others angry as Holmes was never an all out crazed brawler in the past. This didn’t bother me too much, sure it didn’t really feel like I was watching a real Sherlock adventure but I don’t mind a different take on classic characters every now and then. That’s why I urge any of you people out there looking for a great different Sherlock Holmes movie to check out “Without a Clue” from 1988.

This is definitely a different take on our beloved hero. In this movie Holmes played brilliantly by Michael Caine is actually a boozing unemployed dufus actor who couldn’t find his way out of a public restroom. The brains behind the operation is secretly Watson played by Ben Kingsley, who creates the persona of Sherlock Holmes so he can solve crimes secretly while trying to secure a position at a highly respectable medical practice. This is quite an interesting take on the legend and it’s a helluva good time.

It’s a treat seeing the bumbling Holmes taking orders from Watson, watching Sherlock hog the spotlight with out a clue as to what the hell he is talking about as he fools Scotland Yard into thinking he’s a superhuman crime solving super hero. It’s a perfect anti-buddy comedy as soon Sherlock’s got everyone fooled and is soon chosen to solve the movies mystery on his own as Watson is suddenly “killed” in a plot by the evil Moriaty and suddenly he has to try and play the part of the legend on his own for real.

I love the period of Sherlock Holmes that’s part of the charm for me with these movies but this one is just a splendid 1980’s movie that’s a perfect watch alongside “Murder by Decree” & “Young Sherlock Holmes” which is hands down my favorite Sherlock flick ever. Though the movie back in the 80’s received relatively poor reviews I think it’s charming little adventure. If you get the craving for more mysterious adventure make sure to check out this often overlooked lil’ gem!

LARPing Hits The Mainstream in Knights of Badassdom!

So it seems that LARPing is getting some real props lately in the world of movies. The new trailer for “Knights of Badassdom” continues this trend on the silver screen. Let’s admit it LARPing is an easy thing to poke fun at, personally I have never really done it in the traditional sense but never rule it out. Between movies like Role Models and The Wild Hunt and now this one I can only imagine that it’s going to get a lot more popular. Soon there will be college frat boys everywhere donning armor and foam swords  while hosting a kegger in the park. Hey you never know!

Anyway this movie looks like way too much fun, as do all the LARP inspired films so far(hey people it’s probably a blast!). It’s got Steve Zahn and Peter Dinkage ( the most handsome little guy around) who I love from “The Station Agent” (if you have never seen this check it out it’s an awesome movie) teaming up to kick some succubus ass. Can’t wait til’ this one is released. Check out the synopsis and trailer if you haven’t already.. Continue reading

Evil Turkey Thanksgiving Invasion!

Thanksgiving is just a few days away and I’ve already rented my copy of Planes, Trains & Automobiles to watch with a belly full of turkey and a few glasses of wine down the hatch. But the hard thing about thanksgiving for me is that there just doen’t seem to be any real thanksgiving themed horror movies out there that are easily accessible to the masses. Actually it doesn’t really seem like there are any at all! Well look no further if you are craving something different this year after the big feast.

If you get a chance check out “Thankskilling” which was released last year on dvd. It’s about a killer turkey who’s out getting his revenge on t-day! Yeah so there wasn’t much of a budget for this film, only $3500 but hey what the hell else are you gonna watch that’s really even mildy entertaining? Well check this out but just make sure your guests are ready for something truely terrible!!

Want the whole scoop on Thanks killing check this out..

WTF Comic Book Moments!!

I just recently saw this cover and I just had to share this here! It seems like Superman, Batman & Robin may be overstepping their boundaries maybe just a little bit here on this one don’t you think?! Hopefully the police didn’t get involved because seriously folks Batman looks WAY too stoked on the idea of stripping down!!

Go For It!!

I thought it’d be cool to share a couple videos with you here that fellow contributor Eljamez filmed and collaborated on here at Universal Dork. I being a personal fan of awkward, quirky humour am a big fan of these and am trying to get him to make some more videos.  He of course as well helped out and filmed the Mister Saturday “Get Your Own” box Video which, well what the hell-I’ll post again here! There’s just not enough damn shameless self promotion here at Universal anyway! Anyway the first video is one of my fav’s for the faux pilot to the show “Going For it” had it been developed more I’m sure it would have rivaled Three’s Company of Perfect Strangers anyday! check it out:

Next up is “The Visit” this is well, um just try and make sense of this one…. Continue reading

Hysterical Psycho – The Best Horror Comedy Since Evil Dead 2?!!

I have been hearing alot of horror hype lately around a new indie horror flick called Hysterical Psycho directed by funny guy Dan Fogler. You may already know Fogler from his roles in Fanboys or Balls of Fury. Well now he’s in the director’s seat with what many horror sites are saying is the best horror comedy since Evil Dead 2. I just read about it again on Bloody Digusting and they too are giving it rave reviews.

From what I can tell it sounds like a pretty run of the mill Slasher Flick in premise at least taking place at a creepy motel where a hysterical psycho resides. Not sure what all the hype is really about but I checked out the trailer and it looks as if it could indeed be alot of fun!  Believe me I live for a good horror comedy but the best horror comedy since Evil Dead 2? Probably not…

Late Night Laughs…

Well sometimes nights can get awfully boring for a dork late at night on a Monday in 2010. Sometimes even a little bit depressing and you find yourself grabbing a six pack of beer at 11:00 pm by yourself. Tonight I just decided I needed a drink so I got some Pabst and a lemon. Yeah well you know there’s nothing wrong with putting a lemon in your PBR! Really you can actually trick yourself into thinking you’re drinking some rad mexican beer with a little imagination. Anyway that’s a monday night really, what’s supposed to happen right? Let’s face it blogging is alot better with a few beers.

So I was thinking of things that might turn a dark cold rainy night in Portland Oregon a little bit brighter. I found a few clips that I think are pretty damn funny. First up is just a short clip from Family Guy that I think is one of the most funny moments ever put into any of the episodes. Being a big fan of Popeye too doesn’t hurt. Yeah I’m a fan of the live action movie too with Robin Williams. I don’t care what anyone says that movie is epic as shit! After I saw it as a kid I dressed up like Popeye and ran around the neighborhood with a can of green beans (I couldn’t find any real spinach in our pantry) like a maniac! Anway this clip is classic and certainly clears up any rumours about the mystery man that is Popeye…

Next is a clip from a movie that I think is easily one of the most funny movies of all time, Stir Crazy. Continue reading
