Iron Man The Pop Singer?!

Weird, today I stumbles across Avenger’s star Robert Downey Jr’s solo album he put out in 2004 called “The Futurist”. Strange stuff-I had no idea he was an adult contemporary singer! Ahhh yes my least favorite genre of music!

It seems that I’m not the only one who’s head this info skipped over. The album pretty much tanked when he released it and he went on to state that he probably wouldn’t ever attempt another one. Hey I think it was a good thing he dropped the music career personally-I’m not sure what you think but I could live with out hearing this song again…

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1988!

I missed this April Fool’s prank the first time around but being a huge fan of the series this pic had me quite confused and elated when I saw it yesterday! I just knew it was too good or bad to be true! But hey Alan Moore made a racy pornographic comic book with Dorthy Gale and Alice from Wonderland called Lost Girls so really this isn’t that much of a stretch now is it? Anyway I just love this cover idea even if it was an April Fool’s joke from Comics Alliance!

“Now, disgraced scientist Emmet Brown has to put together a new team to combat the growing threat of the Lost Boys and their leader, a newly resurrected vampire kingpin Tony Montana: Transportation specialist Jack Burton, ex-commando B.A. Baracus, tech wizard Angus MacGyver and the mysteriously powerful femme fatale known only as “Lisa.” But will Brown be able to stop the Lost Boys before time runs out?”

The Walking Dead Ebay Phenomena!

It seems everyone these days are going absolutely ape shit over The Walking Dead TV series! I personally have only seen the first season and the first two episodes of the second season. I have however been collecting the comic book from the start. Well I bought issue number one when it came out way back in 2003, but after reading it dismissed it as a flash in the pan, 28 days later wanna be series. I even sold the first issue a few months later for thirty bones on Ebay. I was a happy guy. Well about three months later I was at my local comic shop and saw they had The Walking Dead trade paperback there collecting issues 1-6. They made a promise saying that if you didn’t like it they’d return your money. So there I was reading TWD trade and LOVING it! I started collecting all the issues from #7 on and it became my favorite monthly comic.

About a week ago former Universal Dork blogger “The One From Beyond” sent me a text message saying I should consider selling the old back issues as they are causing quite a bit of controversy on Ebay. So checked it out and WOW….people if you own these back issues you may have a dilema on your hands…to sell or not to sell? I have seen issue number one go on ebay recently for over $7000.00. Which really makes me kick myself for selling it back in the day. Luckily I have my old issues 7-current. I recently listed all of my issues through number 38. Issue number 19 has gone recently on ebay for $1600.00 mine ends tomorrow and I can only dream of getting that much for it. There are also other key issues that are pretty sought after like the first appearance of The Governor and issue 61 with the CHEW preview.

So did I do the wrong thing? Are these issues going to go even higher as the show progresses? Or are they the comic book equivalent of a Beanie Baby or Cabbage Patch Kid? It’s a gamble. I however say I gotta get it while the getting is good. Like my last post stated I am a little tired of the zombie craze at this point. I do still like TWD every month but just not as much as I did four years ago. But a heads up to all my fellow Dorks out there your Walking Dead comics are gold, once again us nerds rule……

Oh by the way you should go bid on my Walking Dead #19 😉

Happy Easter! Just Another Reason to Showcase This Awesome Cover Again!

Happy Easter! Yeah Easter egg hunts, Cadbury eggs, Easter baskets and of course bunnies! So you know what that means? Yes time to showcase the worst comic book team up EVER yet again! Superman & The Quik Bunny!!! This is NOT the first time this cover has graced the blog and it won’t be the last! I used to own this comic as a kid as you could order it from Quik that yummy powder chocolate milk mix drink! Boy even back in the day I thought this comic book sucked! Nothing cool about it at all just “Quiky” the lame bunny and Superman taking on the Weather Wizard. My question is did Superman really need the help of the mother fucking Quik Bunny to defeat the Weather Wizard?!!

Well you know what? You’d think this Quik Bunny comic book bullshit would stop right there but nope! Apparently Marvel was SO impressed with how bad ass the Quik Bunny was in the DC Superman/Quiky team up one shot that they decided to cross him over into the Marvel Universe! Yeah Marvel then teams him up with Spider-man!

There you have it folks! HAPPY EASTER!!

Truly Strange Celebrity Comic Book Appearances! Part 2!

So guess who else was immortalized into a comic book back in 1984? None other than David Letterman! Yeah he made his first comic book appearance in The Avengers #239! It seems that Wonder Man used his connections as an actor to get the team on Late Night’s most popular television show! However this appearance is no cake walk for the team as the dastardly super villain Fabian Stankowicz aka The Mechano Marauder attacks the team on live television with his crazy ass gadgets! He then takes the guest seat and chats with Letterman about how his plan is foiling The Mighty Avengers in front of a live audience.

The Avengers who are unable to take down Fabian due to a force field he’s got surrounding him and Dave-so yes folks it’s up to Letterman to take matters into his own hands and steal the show! This issue sounds pretty ridiculous huh?

Well it was one of those “assistant editor” issues that came out in ’84 where you basically got a zany issue of the unpredictable! Damn those were the days back in the 80’s! Also Paul Shaffer is seen in the issue rockin’out-folks next time you’re back issue shopping grab up this little gem of an issue!

Truly STRANGE Celebrity Comic Book Appearances!! Part 1!

I am going to do a little research here to find out the most bizarre celebrity appearances in comic books over the years-believe me there are some weird ones! This first week will focus on the legendary comic book appearance of Alice Cooper that took place in 1979 in Marvel Premiere #50!!

This is a pretty fun comic book altogether with some great artwork and zany story that follows our hero Alice as he tries to escape from the mental ward where he’s basically abused by “The Doctor” the story’s villain. It seems ol’ Alice just can’t catch a break here as he’s foiled again and again.

The comic book adventure is titled “From the Inside” and is based on the album of the same name. This wasn’t the last appearance of Alice in a Marvel Comic book he actually returned again in 1994 for a 3 part mini series written by Neil Gaiman called The Last Temptation which accompanied his album of the same name. So Alice is a certified Marvel character! Check them out!

More Mignola Cartoons Please!!

For those of you cartoon lovers out there I wanted to make sure that none of you missed “The Amazing Screw-on Head” from 2006. Based off of a Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame, one shot comic book of the same name from 2002. This single episode was the pilot for what was hoped to be a Sci-Fi channel original series. For whatever reason it was not picked up and we are left simply with this 22 minute episode full of brilliant animation, awesome quirky characters and a ton of action! I love Mignola and weekly read his comics and if there were more cartoons out there like this one the world would be a much better place!

Screw-on Head is the occult robot investigator of Abe Lincoln (this ass wipe again?! don’t get me started!) who can screw his head on and off into different bodies. He then follows Lincoln’s orders to fight zombies werewolves and whatever else goes bump in the night-kinda like a prequel to BPRD. The pilot had a survey to get peoples reactions, apparently it was too out there for the masses. It even had a star studded cast of Paul Giamatti, Patton Oswalt, Molly Shannon & David Hyde Pierce. What more could you ask for people? Well anyway if like rad cartoons and have never seen this check it out – you won’t be disappointed as it looks exactly like Mignola’s artwork has jumped off of the page of one of his comics!!

The New Spider-Man Trailer-What Do You Think?!

So yeah everyone is obviously talking about the new Amazing Spider-man trailer, by now I have watched it several times and I honestly think it looks alright! Now that’s not to say I am thrilled by this flick, I have to come clean here I am actually pretty damn sick of big budget Hollywood comic book movies. They are downright disposable and really don’t have a lot of staying power. I mean that by saying when seeing them a second time the initial thrill has worn off and these big budget plastic films are kind of a bore actually. They are pumped full of rubbery looking cg and safe predictable story lines.

So yeah the new Spider-man trailer looks slightly better that what I was expecting, if looks leaps better than Raimi’s shlock that’s for sure. I still don’t like the costume, you know the one Peter Parker made from a bunch of deflated basketballs? The Lizard looks ok so far, from what I can tell he’s either largely CG or entirely which doesn’t excite me the least. In fact most of the action sequences I have seen so far look like a video game. Garfield looks pretty good as Parker and it seems the story should at least be good upon first viewing. Oh yeah and kudos to them giving him his self invented web shooters!

I have to say though I would have loved for Marvel to bring a new super hero to life, perhaps Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, The Black Panther or Iron Fist even. Just personally kinda still not over the last three Spidey movies fully. So here we go again already, I will definitely be seeing this in the theaters but honestly I’m not totally stoked on the idea.

I am excited for The Avengers movie, mostly because of Whedon’s involvement, hoping that perhaps he brings us the memorable movie I have always dreamnt of. Lastly I really would like to see some smaller scale superhero movies made, something gritty and more real world feeling. Not real world as in realistic but rather something that doesn’t feel like a bunch of people in front of a green screen the entire movie. Something inventive, with feeling that really transplants you into the pages of a comic book…

Old School Comic Artist That Need to Come Back: Michael Golden!!

Surely comic book fans have not forgotten about Michael Golden?! If so you need a goddamn refresher in a bad way! Don’t get me wrong there are some amazing artists out there in comics today-but lets not forget about the old dogs! Seriously where have some of these guys disappeared to?! If we can get John Romita Jr doing tons of new comics we should be able to get Michael Golden back in the limelight?! It really only takes one glimpse at this incredible posted he did back in the early 80’s to solidify my point- “The Merry Marching Confusion” mail order only poster is still one of my favorite pieces of artwork ever, I ordered it back in the day through the mail and the poster still graces my wall in my room! I laminated it a few years ago as I was afraid it was falling apart, but seriously check it out! San you name them all? Give it a try!

Most of Mikes art was most popular through the late 1970’s and early 80’s. Probably most well known for his work on the Micronauts and his art for the immensely popular The ‘Nam, Vietnam war series put out in 1986 by Marvel golden was a comic superstar. He kinda disappeared from the scene in the 1990’s but later returned in the 2000’s doing some cover art for DC.

He also is responsible for the Danzig & Samhain logos that were lifted off of the background for the lesser know Crystar issue #8. Funny to picture good ol’ Glenn reading Crystar and playing with the awesome action figures in the 80’s!! Gotta love Danzig’s dorkdom though!!

So where is Golden today? Well to my surprise it seems he is on the scene recently becoming the relaunched Spawn’s regular cover artist as well as plenty more for Marvel! Glad to see he’s back kicking ass again…

Wait since when does The Hulk only have four toes?!

The Green Goblin Could Have Been Rad!! Shame on Raimi!

Everyone remembers how truly crap-tas-tic Sam Raimi’s Green Goblin was in the 2002 Spider-man movie right? Remember he was essentially a green Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. Let’s put it this way-if you were actually a fan of The Green Goblin, one of the greatest comic book villains EVER, you weren’t keen on his Goblin. Well as it turned out he got a second chance at bringing us the Goblin we all wanted in the wretched Spider-man 3, what did we get? James Franco on a flying snowboard!

Well people here we get a new look at what Raimi was considering for the look of the Green Goblin, this design was done by ADI and Sam is actually directing the actor in this clip. I don’t know about you but to me this IS the Green Goblin-however to Sam I guess he liked the Power Ranger idea-then again this is the guy who made Spider-man 3 so this isn’t surprising….
