The Avengers: The Universal Dork’s Verdict!
Well folks here I am with the official scoop on The Avengers. I’m sure most have already either read how awesome this movie is or like me saw it yesterday on opening night!! Well I here by give it the Universal Dork stamped seal of approval! The Avengers delivered the goods more so than I expected. In this day and age I’m highly critical of most things Hollywood serves us up-because it’s usually a bunch of weak ass bullshit! Especially comic book movies these days, they usually kinda suck with the exception of The Dark Knight and if they don’t suck they are heavily flawed. However, put a director behind it who truly cares for the source material and you can get something incredibly mighty. This is the case with The Avengers. It could have been a complete disaster had nearly any other wack ass Hollywood hack director got their grimy little hands on it.
But alas, it was worth the wait for Joss Whedon’s vision. I really never doubted him but I was surprised when the movie exceeded my expectations. Streamlined with a simplistic story, within the first few minutes of the movie know you’re in for a treat. We’ve got a superhero sandwich here and Whedon knows how to serve it up fresh giving us quite possibly the best versions of all of these superheroes to hit the silver screen yet.
The first Iron Man movie was a heck of a good time, Norton’s Incredible Hulk proved to be a bit of a failed experiment the second time around with it’s cheap CG version of the green goliath and The Abomination, Iron Man 2 was instantly forgettable and unnecessary, Thor was passable but once again failed with bad CG, a rather stale lead and story, then finally we got Captain America which to me was the best of the bunch leading Iron Man perhaps only because of Cap’s incredibly interesting back story. The Avengers on the other hand doesn’t feel cheap or rushed. It’s exactly what you hoped it’d be and a little bit more.
We finally get us some Nick Fury in more than just thirty second cameos. Sam Jackson shines as the movie’s glue as he not only forms the team but also manages to get in on the action as well and show us why exactly he’s SHIELD’s main man. The rest of the crew were excellent as well and when they all finally appear together it feels much more special than anything marvel has ever done cinematically. It’s a riot to see them interact and argue like a bunch of unruly teenagers. The screen just doesn’t seem big enough for all of their “super” egos so when they do finally work as a team it’s well worth the trouble getting there.
The movie never tires, it’s jammed to the brim with action, humor and some great character development. Let’s face it you gotta have some humor when listening to Thor babble or look at Steve Rogers hanging around in his red white and blue duds all day. They are quite a funny bunch of misfits actually. With that all said I think it’s time to give my two cents worth on The Hulk. I never thought I’d say it but I am kinda glad Ed Norton decided to sit this one out. Mark Ruffalo was the best on screen movie Banner yet. He brings a sort of desperation to the film and looming sense of unease as we wait nearly up to the third act before we finally get to see the green guy in action. I think this time around they almost got the Hulk perfect too. Almost. He’s easily the most realistic and convincing Hulk we’ve seen on film. He looks leaps and bounds better than the Norton version, which I recently watched again and just couldn’t get past the wretched CG green giant. This Hulk at least feels like he’s got some weight on him, rather than some flimsy “Roger Rabbit” computer generated cartoon leaping on screen with real actors. You can tell Whedon wanted to get him right this time around. I can’t say it’s my dream “movie Hulk” as you can still tell he’s a purely CG creation but a guy has got to give up at some point, as I have given up and accept that Hollywood has a formula they are sticking to special effects wise and it’s just NOT going to change. So I accept this Hulk if only because of the comparison to my last two movie representations.
Lastly I would like to point out a few things I think could have been better. Though I thought that Loki was a sufficient villain he wasn’t a very interesting one. A bit on the bland side I personally would have rather seen Baron Zemo or The Red Skull return and put together a “Masters of Evil”, just villains that are a little more captivating and frightening. Loki being a bit of an on screen bore didn’t get much help either from the Whedon created Chitauri alien race and personally I would have liked to have seen more of them in the movie as I think they could have put a little more fear into us movie goers hearts as villains. I never really believed that Loki was all that hell bent on the mission at hand. In a second installment I’d love better villains-give us Mister Hyde, Goliath, The Wrecking Crew, Titania and The Absorbing Man!
My only real big problem with the film was actually the Chitauri in the final act of the film. This falls on the fact that our heroes were doing a lot of battle with them in the city and for some reason Whedon decided to CG them entirely. They were roughly the size of an average human so why not have real actors there playing them? It at times looked a bit funny seeing these real actors battling CG aliens in hand to hand combat. I don’t want to spend anymore time on this topic, but hey Joss, just so you know nothing is better than the real thing. If you don’t have to CG it don’t do it. Remember “I am Legend” with Will Smith? Nuff said….
The Avengers regardless exceeded my expectations and put a big smile on my face. Joss Whedon did it and once again it was well worth the wait. Now it’s just a question of what’s next?!
The Avengers Assemble and Search for Employment?!
Been watching these cool little videos lately called “Avengers Assemble!”. They are pretty damn fun, well done and they’ve got a ton of them up. They take on modern problems like Healthcare, jobs, romance, oil spills, car pooling, don’t ask don’t tell, just to name a few.
They have a lot of different Marvel characters that show up in the episodes and one even stars Stan Lee! Check it out as Ms. Marvel tries to land a job, proving it ain’t easy to find one these days! Make sure to watch after the credits…
oh yeah even superheroes are having a tough time with health care these days!
Truly Strange Celebrity Comic Book Appearances! Part 2!
So guess who else was immortalized into a comic book back in 1984? None other than David Letterman! Yeah he made his first comic book appearance in The Avengers #239! It seems that Wonder Man used his connections as an actor to get the team on Late Night’s most popular television show! However this appearance is no cake walk for the team as the dastardly super villain Fabian Stankowicz aka The Mechano Marauder attacks the team on live television with his crazy ass gadgets! He then takes the guest seat and chats with Letterman about how his plan is foiling The Mighty Avengers in front of a live audience.
The Avengers who are unable to take down Fabian due to a force field he’s got surrounding him and Dave-so yes folks it’s up to Letterman to take matters into his own hands and steal the show! This issue sounds pretty ridiculous huh?
Well it was one of those “assistant editor” issues that came out in ’84 where you basically got a zany issue of the unpredictable! Damn those were the days back in the 80’s! Also Paul Shaffer is seen in the issue rockin’out-folks next time you’re back issue shopping grab up this little gem of an issue!
An Old School Take on the Upcoming Avengers Movie!
Check out this animated fan made trailer of the upcoming Avengers movie put together with old school 1960’s animated clips! Pretty funny and really would have close to perfect if they could have somehow found an older version of Nick Fury (this one here is from 1995) as it looks a little out of place with the rest. In the defense of the people who threw this together though it was the first time Fury was animated…still a nice treat for dorks like myself-check it!!
Dear Batman, Please Kick Frank Miller’s Ass!!
Hey so not sure if anyone out there has heard Frank Miller’s most recent brainless rant that he posted on his official website? Well apparently Frank is just sooooooo damn upset about this new Occupy movement that he couldn’t keep all of his his anger inside! After reading this I think maybe Frank has actually been living his life inside of a real comic book that he wrote! He seems as clueless as ever as he calls Occupy protesters “a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness.” This sounds like perhaps Frank has been reading Batman: The Cult a few too many times in the past week?
He thinks all of us “pond scum” need to be focused on the real threat to America “al-Qaeda & Islamicism”. Wow maybe you, Frank Miller actually believe Captain America is a real guy and the USA isn’t really a bunch of thugs who threaten the World’s safety ever? It’s that simple to Frank USA good! Islam BAD! I bet Frank thinks The Joker and The Red Skull are running al-Qaeda and that Perhaps George Bush is secretly Nick Fury and Obama is The Black Panther!! Yeah Frank! The Occupy movement has actually been put together secretly by The new Baron Zemo and Lex Luthor! Those master minds have turned the population against the good guys in Government and Captain America is behind the scenes right now Frank, he’s dismantling the brainwashing machine they put together months ago!!
Yeah Frank also says that the protesters should “Enlist for the real thing. Maybe our military could whip some of you into shape.” Yeah! Go USA military Go! Hey Frank if you can promise me that Bucky Barnes and Dum Dum Dugan will be there in person to train me I’ll certainly give it a shot! Go USA!! Yeeeeehaw! Anyway check out this rant by a man I once used to respect…dammit Frank What would The Dark Knight think of you now?!
You can read it yourself here: Frank Miller on Occupy
The New Avengers Trailer! Does it Live Up to the Hype?!
Just saw the latest trailer for The Avengers movie and It so far looks like a good time. Hopefully it’ll be the best Marvel movie yet, which actually would’t be a difficult accomplishment for Joss Whedon as honestly I can say that the Marvel movies are a good time on their first view, but on repeated viewings really aren’t much to write home about.
But how can we honestly NOT be excited about an Avengers movie directed by Joss Whedon? So here it is, along with some terrible Godsmack style rock song. We also finally get a glimpse of The “Ruffalo” Hulk and for the record he still looks fake…..
Yet Another New Cap Trailer!
Here we are again with yet another new Cap trailer! Still this one again leads me to believe this will be the best Marvel movie of them all, but really now are any of the Marvel comics movies really that fantastic? Not really, they really don’t age well and I’ve got a lot of problems with each of them really. I also wonder if this Cap movie will be well received worldwide? How much does the rest of the world really like the USA and a super hero that runs around donning our flag? We’ll see I guess! I firmly believe if Cap were a real guy he’d be up in arms over the state of our country and our sub par, dishonest leaders who run the government. Anyway here it is -and this time we get to hear the Red Skull speak!
Obscure Super Hero Flicks!! Part One!
Damn there are alot of super hero movies coming out huh? Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, The new Superman reboot! Jeez, these movies are still killing it at the box office! The only problem is is what are all of us dorks gonna do in the meantime while we wait for these blockbusters?! Well people, wonder no more – I have the got the cure for your super hero fever right here!
I am going to recommend you a few lesser know super hero movies that are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!! Now ese may not have the budget of say Iron Man 2, but I think you’ll agree today’s choice is sure to fill the empty void in your life…Check out Super Fuzz from 1980!
New Cap Trailer Arrives!
Check out this brand new trailer for the upcoming Captain America movie that was released today! So far it’s still looking to me as this one is set to be the best Marvel movie yet! Still however no hint of the Invaders who are rumored to be fighting along side Cap as well-I’ve got my fingers crossed though still. Also no images of Bucky in uniform-they better not flake! Anyway check it out-it’s looking damn good..
The RED SKULL Revealed!
All I can say is wow! Everybody’s favorite red headed nazi love to hate villain is finally revealed for the upcoming Cap movie! I have to say Hugo Weaving looks fantastic as the Red Skull!
It looks like they finally got the look down perfectly-as you may or may not remember the shitty sweaty red burn victim style look that Scott Paulin as the Red Skull back in 1990 but it was bad! I mean if you are going to call someone the Red Skull at least make sure their damn head looks like a skull right? Check it out!
Now I am hoping for Bucky pics too-as in Bucky in costume that is! Also I haven’t heard much about The Invaders since there was rumor that they were to be appearing in the movie-I hope they are indeed still on board! So far this one could shape up to be the best Marvel flick yet!!
