Walt Simonson What Happened?!
I have done several posts here about how the “old dog” comic artists need to come back and show the young’ins how it’s done. I have ranted about John Byrne, Mike Zeck, Barry Windsor Smith and Walt Simonson. Well I guess I am going to eat my words here as I just couldn’t hold it in anymore. Walt Simonson’s latest artwork well kinda….SUCKS. There I said it. It’s out there on the table. I was initially thrilled to find out that him and Bendis were teaming up for the latest running arc of The Avengers but upon initially seeing the artwork I was stunned at just how terrible his skills have gotten over the years. So what gives? Did he just forget how to draw? Was he rushed and didn’t give a shit? Or am I crazy and maybe he always sucked? Lets take a closer look…
New Simonson 2012 (these are random images I found online, perhaps I can scan some soon that may really get my point across, however if you are reading Avengers currently you know what I mean) :
Walt Simonson 1980’s:
Well Walt all I ask is that you put a little more effort into it dude! It’s clear you got the skills still, maybe you don’t think you need to prove anything? Well I’ll be watching closely for a return to form
Pontypool 2 Teaser Poster!!!
Please tell me that you all have seen Pontypool? If not make it the next movie you check out! Seriously I voted Pontypool as the best horror flick of 2010 and believe me I am a tough critic these days when it comes to horror. If you have never seen it before it’s best that you know almost nothing about it, in fact I recommend not even reading the synopsis. If you really still ain’t convinced here’s the trailer.
I have been wondering if there would perhaps be a second installment to this brilliant movie and it turns out the movie’s director Bruce McDonald does indeed have something in store for us all which he claims will shock and awe us the way the first film did! Here’s the teaser art for “Pontypool Changes” due 2013. I can’t wait!
Comic Book Nostalgia: Rock Star Rob Liefeld and his 501’s!
I have mentioned this commercial here from the early 90’s you know back when Rob Liefeld was a comic book rock star! I am not sure how that happened really to this day, it still amazes me but ol’ Liefer has gotten enough negative press! So let’s not dwell on the fact that comic books like Youngblood is seriously unreadable as in doing so will likely make you less intellegent & damage your brain.
Check this out and relive a little comic book nostalgia!
Well folks that’s not all for today I also found this interview with Dennis Miller from back in the day. I think this was pre-Dennis Miller is the biggest Douche in the world era. Now that I am thinking about when exactly did Miller switch from being super funny to an asinine political tool? It happened overnight it seemed, well anyway check this out too more Rock Star Liefeld!
The 1980 Incredible Hulk Portfolio Must be Mine Again!
Way back in 1980 I had the coolest pictures of the Hulk ever! They came in the Marvel Super Hero Portfolio collection and one of the collections was based entirely on ol’ jade jaws himself!! I just ran across these on Ebay while searching for vintage super hero t-shirts and stuff and it was like a blast back in time!
So naturally it’s bidding time and actually they are not pricey at all. I thought I’d share these amazing pics here for anyone who’s never seen these awesome painting by Fastner & Larsen who also did an amazing Spider-Mna portfolio as well! Check these bad boys out!
The Rods Rip Up Texas With Their Rad Album Cover!
This last weekend I went on a super adventure to Marfa Texas for a friends birthday bash! It was a neat little barrio town in the middle of nowhere and was filled with alot of incredible art and interesting people. The kind of city that when you go out to a party in the evening you see everyone you encountered earlier that day, like your waiter at the restaurant, the guy from the liquor store, the person who gave you the art tour, the grocery store bagger guy, and even the 65 year old jewelry maker wound up partying down with the best of ’em. So yeah there were alot of art foundations there too-I even checked out the Andy Warhol “Last Supper” paintings-but I have to say that the best peice of artwork I saw was on an album cover of a record I bought at a vintage thrift store there!
The album was by a band I have never heard of called The Rods. It’s called “Wild Dogs” and boy I’m kinda wishing it’s album cover was on display there in Marfa! Yeah I couldn’t resist-I got the album back safely and was pleasantly suprised at how hard The Rods kicked my motherfucking ass with their rock too! Anyway here’s a song from the album-sometimes you can judge a book by it’s cover!!
