Still Trying to Forget The “New Monkees” of 1987!!

Well I have had The Monkees on the brain since hearing of Davy Jones passing yesterday. It got me thinking of the Monkees when I was a kid and how much I loved them. It also got me thinking of something else I wish I could forget-do any of you remember The New Monkees?!!

If not that’s probably a good thing! If you do then you know what a crap-tas-tic idea and show this was. The year was 1987 and in 1986 the Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork released the hit song “That Was Then, This is Now” remember that? Well it brought on a sort of Monkees revival and someone over at Columbia Pictures thought the answer to this new rise in popularity was….The New Monkees.

These idiots had zero to do with the old group but somehow they got a tv show, an album and the band name The Monkees! Not a bad deal huh!? Well what happened was nobody gave a shit about the NEW Monkees, their show or their music-because well, people loved the REAL Monkees!!! I know as a kid this shit didn’t compare and it actually made me angry when this show would suddenly appear on my tv screen! Geez…anyway they made some really bad 80’s music and 13 really incredibly unfunny tv episodes….so live it up New Monkees today you get another 5 seconds of fame from me here….Enjoy!!

The Caps: A Feel Good 70’s Sitcom Set to Music…

I recently was given  a complimentary copy of  the new album “Have a Blast”, by Portland Oregon’s “The Caps” and it’s had me smiling ever since the first listen. These guys have been around for just a few years now releasing their second album with a new line up save James Hall the bands original drummer who recently rejoined and singer/guitarist Chris Worth. On “Have a Blast” they are back with eleven of the catchiest pop songs you’re likely to hear in 2011. Like a three way battle between Belle & Sebastian, Superchunk and The Beach Boys dashed with slightly off humor reminiscent of They Might Be Giants, The Caps manage to bring the rock while still maintaining a soft side you could be sipping champagne to while reading back issues of Mad Magazine.

The songs now, with lead vocals almost evenly split between Worth and new guitarist Andrew Grimaldo, are filled with humor you’re either going to get or quite possibly fly right over your head leaving you wondering if these guys are really taking themselves seriously. A song like “Bike City” could practically be Portland’s anthem here as one of the most bike-centric cities in America Continue reading

Lady Gaga: The Mutant Spawn of Pinball’s CENTAUR!!

Ok well I just had to share this little bit of incredible info with everyone out there! I have figured out exactly where Lady Gaga comes from! Some people think that she’s from outer space and is an alien-CRAZY huh? No actually right on target! First off I have to say if any of you out there think Lady Gaga’s new album cover for “Born This Way” is original you all need to wake the hell up!

It’s totally clear what the hell has happened here ! If you are unaware of the 1981 Bally pinball game Centaur then you know where this is headed… Continue reading

The Rods Rip Up Texas With Their Rad Album Cover!

This last weekend I went on a super adventure to Marfa Texas for a friends birthday bash! It was a neat little barrio town in the middle of nowhere and was filled with alot of incredible art and interesting people. The kind of city that when you go out to a party in the evening you see everyone you encountered earlier that day, like your waiter at the restaurant, the guy from the liquor store, the person who gave you the art tour, the grocery store bagger guy, and even the 65 year old jewelry maker wound up partying down with the best of ’em. So yeah there were alot of art foundations there too-I even checked out the Andy Warhol “Last Supper” paintings-but I have to say that the best peice of artwork I saw was on an album cover of a record I bought at a vintage thrift store there!

The album was by a band I have never heard of called The Rods. It’s called “Wild Dogs” and boy I’m kinda wishing it’s album cover was on display there in Marfa! Yeah I couldn’t resist-I got the album back safely and was pleasantly suprised at how hard The Rods kicked my motherfucking ass with their rock too! Anyway here’s a song from the album-sometimes you can judge a book by it’s cover!!
