The Shaolin Cowboy deliver’s the Ultimate Zombie Massacre!

I just recently started reading The Shaolin Cowboy from Dark Horse Comics and so far it’s a blast. I’ve been familiar with the title and years ago browsed through the comic thinking that for the art alone, that it looked like something that I’d love to read. Well about six years ago was when the seventh and at that time the last issue was released. I forgot about the book, and honestly with comic books being around four bucks a pop it sometimes isn’t a matter of wanting to read a title, but choosing what I can afford. If it were up to me I’d be reading or trying out dozens of titles weekly.

Well last month I saw The Shaolin Cowboy was back in a new mini series and this time I decided to give it a shot as honestly I’ve had a hard time getting into my favorite superhero books lately for whatever reason. Well I’m happy to say the book is delivering on a different level than I’m used to. Shaolin Cowboy doesn’t really seem to have a real plot, I could tell this by the weird “the story so far” section that preceded issue #1. The comic book is a strange dream like tale that is a real feast for the eyes! It’s artist Geoff Darrow is hands down one of the best, if not the best in the industry.

Issue #2 was a surreal treat, it featured thirty three straight pages of zombie carnage as the Shaolin Cowboy hacks, slashes, punches and kicks his way through a horde of undead, swinging a bo staff rigged with two chainsaws on each end. It’s a beautiful massacre and not a word is spoken in all thirty three pages. Darrow has claimed this book is his excuse to “draw whatever he wants” and the character “does whatever he wants”, I say that’s more than ok with me, I’ll be back for issue 3 and hopefully the last seven issues will be released in a trade soon.

Lastly, while reading the recent issue I’ve decided that they should consider making a movie based on this book. It’s clearly evident that The Shaolin Cowboy should be played by Sammo Hung. He’s the perfect age and look for the part, and I can only imagine him choreographing these bizarre fight scenes. From Sammo’s back catalog of weird ass movies I’d say he’d be perfect for the part and hell maybe even as director. I said it here first!

The Inspiration Behind “Big Trouble in Little China”!

It’s pretty much common fact this day and age that ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ is one of the coolest movies ever made. Anyone wanna disagree with me here? It pretty much stands alone as one of the best, most original movies that John Carpenter has ever done and defies any real genre. Carpenter must be a genius right?!

Most likely that’s true, but even genius minds get inspired to create awesome things often from some other source. Sometimes though these brilliant minds can unintentionally take full credit for something great. So I wanted to take a quick minute to address just what movie was indeed the inspiration behind ‘Big Trouble’. Ever heard of “Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain“? I didn’t think so!

ZuWarriors

This rad Hong Kong flick from from 1983 was indeed the inspiration for Carpenter’s masterpiece! John Carpenter has gone on record several times citing this movie as his inspiration for his 1986 feature film. Yep this little known special effects driven flick was what got Carpenter’s mind reelin’ to eventually compose “Big Trouble in Little China”. This one is an unknown gem, at least here in the United States where it’s extremely hard to find. Director Tsui Hark, who was attempting to break out a s a superstar, attempted to mix the kind of mythological adventures that were popular at the time, with a more Hollywood approach and more western stylized special effects work.

Even more impressive was that he brought in the people behind Star Wars for technical special effects assistance. Add in my favorite chinese actor Sammo Hung and you’ve got quite a stellar movie! So go check it for yourself but keep in mind that there was a remake (which wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as the original) and if you loved ‘Big Trouble’ eat your heart out with this one! Hong Kong cinema in the 1980’s was a ton of fun!

Iron Fist Hits the Small Screen!

I would love to see Iron Fist, Marvel’s resident kung fu expert hit the big time and get a movie made about him with a ton of kick ass over the top martial arts action! However as of right now I don’t think there are any real solid plans to bring Danny Rand into theaters.

If they did though it’d be great to see his old buddy Power-Man or just simply Luke Cage (as he apparently thought his yellow & blue costume and name weren’t cool anymore) in the same movie. There have been a lot of rumours about a Cage movie coming to fruition but without Iron Fist I just don’t think it’d be as cool. Perhaps it’d simply be called Heroes for Hire? In the meantime though we can all try and enjoy this fan made Iron Fist movie, which kinda plays like a real life superhero adventure, I almost expected to see Phoenix Jones pop out and help Rand and Elektra….what do you think of this fan made short? Who would make the perfect Danny Rand in a big screen movie?

These Ass Kicking Jeans Must Be Mine!

I have been on a hunt for new pants for myself for quite a while-and now I know 100% now that I have to track down a pair of these awesome Chuck Norris Action Slacks!! I’m a big fan of vintage clothing in fact I own a vintage clothing store here in Portland Oregon called “Hollywood Babylon”- well how’s that for shameless self promotion? I just began today officially searching for a vintage pair of these for myself because well who doesn’t want to kick ass like ol’ Chuck?

I remember seeing ads for these pants back in the 80’s when I was a kid and I always thought they were funny but today I guess it really dawned on me that they are actually super fly! Look closely at the crotch as they have a super stretchy area so that you can kick really high and not split your pants. Well I tell you only Norris could come up with something like these for the public. I bet too that it hurt like hell back then to be kicked in the face with those bad ass cowboy boots he’s always wearing too! So yeah I will find a pair-I will keep you posted!!

Truly Un-Epic Hand Lasers Rule!!

So you all are aware of how much I like bad movies? You may be able to tell by my post yesterday how much I enjoy 80’s fantasy movies. So once again I stumble upon a trailer for a movie that I simply have GOT to see. It’s apparently from 1984, made in Indonesia and looks to be the shiniest turd of a film I have yet to lay my eyes upon! Check out the trailer for the most truly un-epic movie of the 80’s!

This movie seems to have it all folks! Terrible fight sequences, completely ridiculous looking special effects, laughably raunchy sex scenes, people who ride on flying rocks and who shoot lasers from their hands! It really doesn’t get any better or worse than this! Today I begin my own hunt for this craptastic gem cuzI feel a bad movie night coming on soon!

Spooky Encounters – Kung Fu Horror at it’s BEST!!

Last night I had the pleasure of viewing an amazing movie I had never seen before from the 80’s! Spooky Encounters was something that had sat in my online que for months until it finally arrived for me in the mail. What I saw was one of the coolest horror comedies of the 80’s! I guess for me it was so rad because I have never really seen a movie quite like it-kinda like Sam Raimi directing a kung fu movie back when he still made unique and exciting cinema ( I suppose he redeemed himself with Drag Me to Hell-but it takes alot to recover from Spider-man 3!).

It’s pretty much got all that you need, great kung fu, a great soundtrack, ghosts, kung fu zombies and Sammo Hung’s (the movie’s star) comedic genius! So much that it’s jumped to the top of my list of dvd purchases! Continue reading

Let’s hear it for Chinese Popeye!!

Holy shit-you wanna see something truely amazing that will blow your mind? Well look no further cuz it’s time for motherfucking Chinese Popeye to blow it off the roof! Yeah chinese Popeye appears in a movie from 1976 called The Dragon Lives Again in which the soul of Bruce Lee heads off to Hell and meets a number of  weird ass people like James Bond, Laurel & Hardy and most incredibly Popeye! But even more rad is that he’s kicking mummy ass all over the place! It’s a dream come true to have a Bruce Lee / Popeye team up bro-down!

I have yet to see this movie in its entirety but after viewing this short clip and being a mega Popeye fanatic this is clearly a must see!! Check this shit out!!! Robin Williams didn’t want you to know that some bad ass beat him to the punch-but man what I would pay to see Chinese and American Robin Williams Popeye duke it out!!

Saturday Night fights!!

It’s Saturday night here at Universal Dork and I think everyone should watch this segment from an AMAZING movie called “Undefeatable” to get pumped up for the evening! If you’ve never seen this you are in for a treat! If you have seen it maybe you need to be reminded why it’s probably the best, most well choreographed fight scene in cinematic history. Prepare to be blown away!~ ENJOY!

THE BEST KUNG FU MOVIE EVER.

What? You have never seen ‘The Crippled Masters’? This movie popped into my head this morning for some strange reason and it led me on a search for it on ebay. I remember seeing this amazing flick at like midnight, on Kung Fu Theater (which  used to show every friday night in the 80’s when I lived in Milwaukee  Wisconsin) when I was a kid and being completely blown away. I guarantee you’ve never see anything quite like this before. I owned this a few years back on vhs but somehow lost it in my move to Oregon. It’s a true rare kung fu classic. One I can only imagine is loved dearly by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Go hunt this down as soon as possible and get ready to view kung fu movies in a whole new light!!
