Death Metal, a Catholic Priest, Tv Guru & Satan’s son….
What? You’ve never seen “The Day of the Beast” before? I recently rewatched this awesome quirky spanish horror comedy and it was just as good as the first time! This movie from 1995 was directed by Alex De La Iglesia and is just a plain fun as hell time. The plot is simple. Father Cura discovers that the antichrist will be born on Christmas Eve and sets out on a mission to stop it it from happening. He also decides that in order to make contact and become closer with the devil he must commit as many sins as he can within the next 24 hours . But this priest can’t do it alone. He employs the help of a self proclaimed satan worshipin’ death metal head record store clerk named Jose Maria and the dark sleezy tv psychic guru named Cavan.

Together they hit the streets of Madrid, embarking on a truely hilarious quest to make contact with the devil and stop his spawn from being born. Don’t however expect a hack’em, slash ’em gore fest though, but rather just expect to see a catholic priest and a hesher do some acid, maybe key a few cars, steal money from homeless people as they quest for Beezelbub himself . I might also add for good measure that the film features the beautiful Maria Grazia Cucinotta who is easily a reason alone to watch this film!
Yeah she’s in the movie too…
If you’ve never seen this flick go search it out at your local video store. You may find it as “El Dia de la Bestia” as it was orginally released as in spain. I also recommend watching it with the subtitles but it’s still a pretty entertaining view with the voiceovers. I would say that the films director Alex de la Iglesia is Spain answer to a younger Peter Jackson or perhaps Sam Raimi. It makes me really interested in the rest of his work and I’m eagerly awaiting checking it out!
Here’s the Spanish movie poster…

Ok, I hate to admit this…I have never seen this! On the list now.
