The Caps: A Feel Good 70’s Sitcom Set to Music…
I recently was given a complimentary copy of the new album “Have a Blast”, by Portland Oregon’s “The Caps” and it’s had me smiling ever since the first listen. These guys have been around for just a few years now releasing their second album with a new line up save James Hall the bands original drummer who recently rejoined and singer/guitarist Chris Worth. On “Have a Blast” they are back with eleven of the catchiest pop songs you’re likely to hear in 2011. Like a three way battle between Belle & Sebastian, Superchunk and The Beach Boys dashed with slightly off humor reminiscent of They Might Be Giants, The Caps manage to bring the rock while still maintaining a soft side you could be sipping champagne to while reading back issues of Mad Magazine.
The songs now, with lead vocals almost evenly split between Worth and new guitarist Andrew Grimaldo, are filled with humor you’re either going to get or quite possibly fly right over your head leaving you wondering if these guys are really taking themselves seriously. A song like “Bike City” could practically be Portland’s anthem here as one of the most bike-centric cities in America Continue reading
World’s Greatest Puppet Themed Songs….part 1!
Sometimes when it’s late at night I must admit-I just wanna blog..Yeah maybe I don’t have the scoop on the next great comic book movie, or any real opinion on some lame pg-13 horror movie or maybe not anything clever at all to say about anything. Sometimes I just wanna have a glass of whiskey and listen to a song , watch a video on Youtube that I personally think should be seen by all you late night drinkers. So as I desperately searched for a cool ass puppet themed music vid to post I thought what the fuck-let’s just get a rad song that has some puppet talk in it and post it right here for anyone who just might be as bored as me tonight. We all know that puppets kick major ass-and they can make the world’s most lame band suddenly kick ass when they appear in their rock vids. Well sometimes a band decides just to sing their asses off about puppets. That puppet themed song actually has no puppets in the vid-it’s just a great song by a rad band everyone has heard of…Soul Asylum.
So I already know there are gonna be some ill-informed people here who think Soul Asylum was that one dumb band from the early 90’s who had that lame song “Runaway Train”. Well what people don’t know is that actually Soul Asylum was getting wasted and rockin’ the hell out of the 80’s for a long time before they were featured in Teen Beat mag in the 90’s. Yeah talk about one of the best indie bands of the 80’s-Soul Asylum was IT. They rocked harder than the Replacements, had albums produced by Bob Mould from Husker Du and were hands down one of the best drunken live acts kicin’ your ass with rad guitar riffs and catchy as hell anthems. Straight outta the mid-west, Minnesota to be exact (yeah I am from Wisconsin-deal with it!) These guys were playing my hood religiously back in the day and this song comes from on of the BEST power pop punk albums ever made-Hang Time. Period. If you are really looking to fill a glass full of whiskey tonite then you best accompany it by one of the best drunken bands of the 80’s-and check out one of the best puppet themed songs ever written-Marionette, by yeah, you guessed it that band that wrote Runaway Train…enjoy…
World’s Greatest Puppet Themed Music Videos! Part 3!
Ok so here’s a quickie today once again dealing with puppets in music videos! Today we’ll be checking out Supergrass’ “Pumping on Your Stereo” which features some pretty fucked up puppet horseplay! It’s not a half bad song either-but once again adding the whole puppet angle into the mix makes this track rock that much harder! More to come and if you got any good puppet themed vids in mind please send them my way!!!
The Seattle Weasel Experience!
Tomorrow evening I’m heading off to Seattle to ultimately end up friday evening to see one of my all-time fav punk rock bands Screeching Weasel! I’m pretty pumped as when I first heard them in 1990 they quickly went into heavy rotation as a soundtrack to my highschool years. Their album “My Brain Hurts” is one of the best punk albums of all time hands down. Now they’re back again in 2010 and it turns out a buddy of mine is actually in the band playing bass leading to me being on the guest list at the show(whoa-o-o-a-oh)!
Formed in 1986 these guys have been crankin’ out some of the snottiest anthems of the 80’s and 90’s and hey their from Chicago-near my old stompin’ ground, Wisconsin. Besides Illinois is really just the little brother state to the dairyland anyway. So in honor if this dork rockin’ this friday check out a couple tracks from the midwests best, Screeching Weasel…
Nerds Rejoice! The Descendents are back!!
Wow-well I just heard the news today that one of my all time favorite bands The Descendents are back playing shows again! As you probably already know they’re the pioneers of pop punk. They have been a major influence on so many bands yet never themselves have ever really gotten the recognition they deserve. Not only are they completely from the old school, as they formed in 1978 but they are also probably the dorkiest punk band on the planet.
Lead by punk icon and undeniable nerd Milo Aukerman these guys have made some of the most aggressive and sappy punk rock songs of all time Continue reading
