Back Issue Gold/Rant: The Thing #3
One of the all-time greatest comics written was written by John Byrne. Although now, Byrne is a crotchety guy who probably doesn’t think much about this issue, but The Thing #3 is one of the most moving and important comics of it’s time. Any Fantastic Four or Inhumans fan is probably a little in-love with the dog-like character Lockjaw, whose powers allow him to teleport himself and others to great distances. In issue #3 of The Thing, Byrne shocked fans by having Lockjaw speak for the first time, in a very poignant way by addressing Quicksilver’s predjudices. This was a truly moving issue, check out the scene here:

Absolutely brilliant! But then Peter David had to come along an trash it:

What the fuck? Retconning something that amazing for a stupid ‘buddy’ scene between Pietro and Multiple Man (who have no history of great friendship that needed to be illustrated). Karnak and Gorgon are now cruel dickheads? Thing, the former pilot and Fantastic Four member is now an idiot who falls for practical jokes? And what asshole would actually make a joke like that at such a serious moment? Peter David’s retcon feels so forced it’s not even funny, and the fact that it did nothing plot wise just makes me angrier. A lockjaw that we as readers knew could speak but didn’t or only did so in moments of great importance and character development would be great. But no, the Inhuman royal family are actually just a bunch of dickhead ventriloquists. Fuck ventriloquism.

Oh and anyone who’s interested in the Lockjaw drama needs to check out this excellent site: http://enterthestory.com/lockjaw_talks.html
Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of
this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between user
friendliness and visual appeal. I must say that you’ve done a fantastic job with this.
In addition, the blog loads super quick for me
on Opera. Superb Blog!
