Universal Dork

The Most Unsuccessful Blog on the 'Net Since 2009!

  • Any attempt I can get, I love to relive the cartoons and movies of my childhood.  In this particular case, it occurred to me…what about that movie Watership Down?  I am sure many of the loyal readers are familiar but are most likely in the same position I found myself…I remember that movie, I remember rabbits fighting…lots of blood, it being very confusing…and very dark.  Well, I sat down the other night and watched the classic again and I highly recommend that all the readers, if you have not seen this recently, take the time…it is a classic story for a reason.

  • The new trailer for peter Jackson’s first movie since King Kong has finally been released. Based on the best selling book by Alice Sebold, “The Lovely Bones” follows the story of a young girl who has been murdered as she watches over her family and her killer from heaven. I have never read the book but the movie trailer looks interesting. Reminding me perhaps a bit of his work on “Heavenly Creatures”. It’s not exactly what I would have prefered to be his next work but I will most definately give it a watch. Oh yeah it looks like Mark Wahlberg is in this one too starring as the same character he was from M. Night Shyamalan’s snoozer “The Happening”. Great….

  • Well, Universal Dork has yet another special treat for the loyal followers. Having access to the 2009 San Diego Comic-con allows for a wide variety of things, exclusive movie trailers and previews, TV pilots, Celeb/Creator panels, comics, art, video games, toys…and on and on. But one of the most heralded and timeless aspects of the Comic-con are the attendee’s costumes.

Well, this was my first year attending the Comic-con but the level of participation in donning of costumes met my expectations. So it is with great please that Universal Dork brings you the Best Dressed of San Diego Comic-con 2009. Loyal readers, please keep in mind that approximately 150,000 people were expected at this year’s Comic-con over the course of 4 days, so this is Universal Dorks snippet of the samplings.

  • I just saw this cool little video this morning about crappy movie monsters! Check this out and see what we’re missing out on now that all the crappy monsters are CG! If they are gonna look bad I want em’ this way again! enjoy…

  • In response to the most recent post about the new horror flick “The Collector” being more or less a total clunker, I just had to give theater going horror fans a little hope. I realize that this movie opened up on the 24th and many of you may have already seen it, but for those of you who haven’t you need to trek on down to the theater for “Orphan”!

  • So, The Collector…saw it this weekend and here are my thoughts…

When approaching the theater, I had to remind myself that The Collector was written and directed by Marcus Dunstan. Dunstan has written Saw IV, V, and the upcoming VI (personally, the world could have done without II-V). In the case of The Collector, I really did not want to see new Jigsaw killer, torture scenes, horrendous blood via wild and impractical contraptions, etc., but rather something that would show Dunstan can do different styles of horror. After all, this was his first attempt at directing, perhaps a desire to differentiate himself. Dunstan also has other “interesting” credentials…for instance he was the writer of the Feast movies (again a trilogy that was just fine being one movie, and was a great movie I might add). So, I erased my expectations and ventured forth into the dark confines of my new home for the 85 minute run time.

  • Wow, I could not contain my excitement when I saw this so I had to write up a quick one for you.

    SPACE ACE for the iPhone!

Now, I apologize to anyone that may not have an iPhone, but just perhaps this is the tipping point for you go out and splurge! For those with the iPhone and have no clue what Space Ace is…here is a quick rundown.

    Space Ace Cover

Space Ace was a laserdisc video game produced by Don Bluth. It was unveiled in October 1983 and then released in Spring 1984, and featured film-quality animation played back from a set of Pioneer laserdisc players. The game play was quite simple, but the timing was the tricky part. When I was a kid, it was always a gamble to go to the arcade with the hopes of playing Space Ace and only to find that it was out of order. This was common due to the laserdisc player format being very new and unpredictable. Obviously, with the iPhone…this is not a concern anymore. The iPhone version is actually the third incarnation of the game. The game was revamped in the late 90’s in a DVD format where you used your remote as the controller; also available on Blue Ray and HD DVD if you care.

  • Growing up there were so many cool cartoons. One that always caught this Dorks attention, and remains one of the lesser followed/known is the Spiral Zone. Airing in 1987-88, Spiral Zone was the Trademarked to Tonka toys and ran for 65 episodes. In the end, the series was a financial flop on the part of Tonka, so it appeared they never wanted the light of day to shine upon this great creation ever again. Until recently, the only episodes available for viewing was a small collection of 6 episodes released on VHS by Tonka. Well one man’s love for the series and his shear tenacity shined through to provide a new 8 disc DVD set collecting all of the original episodes!

  • It has recently come to my attention that they are making another “Alien” movie! Yeah I know what you are all thinking-what movie franchises are they NOT remaking or making a sequel for? Well this new Alien will not be a remake but a prequel. Ok well if that is not cool enough how about the fact that Ridley Scott who directed the very first Alien is on board to direct?! Yeah it’s true and I really think this is the way to go with these sequels that are beginning to pop up all over movie land. The movies plot according to Bloodydisgusting.com  so far goes like this:

  • I heard about this film a while back, but typical of me, I did not do my due diligence and follow up…well now Colin, a new British zombie flick is gaining some critical mass.  The most shocking thing is that this movie was made for only $70 or more appropriately, about 42 pounds and 50 pence (based on current exchange rates)!
