• I was recently thinking again about all the cool toys I loved as a kid and still do til this day and the awesome Power Lords by Revell jumped into my head! These guys were so cool and aside from being very detailed many of them were also two sided! Meaning you basically had two charcters in one! My favorite of them was Adam Power, shown in the pic below.

  • Well, well, well…vindication at long last! It appears that some recent studies by Professor Carol L. Tilley (pictured below) at the University of Illinois found that children reading comic books is just as beneficial as reading traditional forms of literature. Huh, shocking…I could have told you that when I was 12 and I managed to navigate my way through endless hours of reading my Dad’s uber collection of classic comics. And despite my dork musings at an early age (i.e., being more concerned with details of superhero stories vs. US history or those bothersome family/friends’ birthdays), my reading and comprehension skills were well developed…or so the results of my CTBS tests told me (remember that shit??).

Anyway, no need to blabber on about this fine bit of research, you can follow the links in the blog and read details on the study findings, Grad School, and the author. But one favor the Universal Dork asks of its loyal readers, the next time you hear someone discredit or discount youths and comics…please intelligently inform them of and pass the results of this study, in hopes to ground their arse in reality!

Score one for the superhero’s and real life super-heroines like Dr. Tilley!

  • I have been waiting for quite sometime for the KICK-ASS trailer to be released and today it finally was! So far this is looking like it could be a good movie rendition as long as they don’t skip on the grit and violence of the amazing comic book. Then again you can never really be too trusting of anything that stars Nicholas Cage these days! Check this out and let us know what you think! They got the opening scene of the comic book done pretty damn perfectly….

  • Here it finally is the new trailer for the Clash of the Titans remake by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). It looks pretty awesome so far to me and I must say I get pretty pumped for new fantasy movies. There just aren’t enough out there! As you can see this looks nothing like the original having a much darker tone to it. So far I’d say the effects look pretty good too. I’ve high hopes for this one-what do you think?

  • Let me guess, there are a lot of Universal Dork followers out there that wish that just a tiny bit…a smidge of the technology we see in sci-fi movies/shows would be real. From teleportation to phasers, or warp speed to food replication…I always thought that Star Trek was one of the most innovative and inspiring shows that pushed the limits with technology…but for some reason you knew it could be real someday.

Well there have been announcements on teleporting photos across a room…cool, but a long way to go till we get to something bigger. May theorists have bought into Warp speed…but again it looks great in the math and on paper. Well wait no more, because now you too can have a Star Trek communicator that works with your cell phone via Bluetooth! All home made, and of course, classic Star Trek style as well, with the flip top and everything.

  • I was happy to discover today that the first episode of  the Creepshow web series was recently launched! The first two Creepshow movies are pretty awesome and a favorite from my childhood. This great 8 minute Creepshow Raw episode keeps up with the fun comic book style horror and you’d swear it was made in 1980’s  check this out! You even get Michael Madsen as the asshole step dad!

  • While digging through some old VHS tapes the other day, I encountered one of the best 90’s sci-fi movies…that I had completely forgot about…Shame on me!  It was a decrepit old copy of Guyver 2: Dark Hero.  As with many of our movie refreshes/reviews, you are probably once again saying to yourself “I have never even heard of this!”   Well consider yourself blessed, cause here is some background on one hell of a great movie!

  • Normally I would just laugh off a movie concept like this…kind of like Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. But much the same reason I endured Mega Shark, I am just curious to see what a film makers vision for aliens and ninja is going to be like. To date, the details are few, so I am sure that it will be sometime till we see the final product. But I am sure once this goes direct to video in the US, I will have it on my Netflix queue!

  • From Lost, to the new Star Trek…JJ Abrams keeps bringing the goods and I for one am happy that a fresh face in Hollywood is able to remake/reimagine and create originals that continue to stir fans crazy. Although I was not a huge fan of Cloverfield, I loved the fact that it was a fresh and original take on the older big ass monster attach genre. So keep the fans guessing, it appears that Abrams is in negotiations to bring a bit of an offbeat but classic comic, The Micronauts, to the silver screen (make sure to check this link, a great site dedicated to the Micronauts!).

  • I read an article at Ign.com today about the Kick-Ass the movie and the new movie posters! I am so damn excited about this movie I can’t even put it into words. If you have ever read the comic book then you totally understand why. It’s one of the best comics I have ever read and sadly one of the quickest reads too. I have always wondered what it would be like in the world if we had real life superheroes and I’m not talking about those guys that walk around the streets in costume giving food to homeless people. Don’t get me wrong it’s a good deed but I am talking about real life masked crime fighters. Well as you probably already know this book answers that question in a world where nobody has super powers. Hopefully the movie won’t be a watered down Hollywood version of the the comic. Anyway here’s one of the posters. Ign has a cool article there about the movie and three more versions of the posters.
