DEADWORLD movie!! One of BEST zombie comics to hit the big screen!

It really surprises me how many people have never read or for that matter even heard of the awesome 1987 comic book Deadworld! This is a great apocolyptic zombie tale that follows a group of Teens traveling in a school bus cross country on the run from the undead. There is a twist though, a group of zombies have gained human intellegence and this gang rides around on Harleys, speak their mind and are led by a bad ass undead biker named “King Zombie” who’s determined  to open the gateway to Hell on Earth!

Well this series was most famed for it’s extemely grotesque covers which were drawn by legendary gore artist Vincent Locke best known as artist for the graphic novel “A History of Violence” (which was what the movie was based on) and his album cover art for grind metal band “Cannibal Corpse” (click their link to see the covers he did). I used to have the trade paperback for volume 1 that came out in 1989 but it was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina as it was on loan to a friend. I highly recommend hunting down this first trade on ebay-though it’s hard to find.

The first volume is definately the strongest and I think sometime in volume 2 Locke leaves the series. This series was also brought back by Image a couple years ago with writer Gary Reed (who took over publishing of this title with his company Caliber in the late 80’s) and once again Vincent Locke as artist.

However the story seemed poorly written and Locke’s art looked rushed at best. It wasn’t long before he left the series entirely once again only to be replaced by Dalibor Talajic. I don’t think the series was ever finished by Image. Well now from what I understand this series is going to hit the big screen! If it is done correctly it could be pretty amazing! This is what had to report on the movie version:

People can’t get enough of zombie stories these days. The walking undead have invaded movies, television, comics, and Regency England and show no signs of abating. I’m beginning to think this is part of the plan to turn us all into zombies and if so, you’ll be meeting your new lord and master in Deadworld. Variety reports that the long running comic series is making its way to the big screen thanks to David Hayter, Benedict Carver, and Bill Mechanic.

Deadworld has been around since 1987, and has always had more of a cult following as opposed to new series such as The Walking Dead. That’s probably because it’s a rather unique and twisted spin on the zombie mythology, as the war to wipe out humanity is told entirely from their point of view. Led by King Zombie, the Harley-riding rotter to your right, they track down and slaughter the humans that cast them out for their accursed ways. The sadistic King seeks to wipe out the last traces of mankind and open the gates of Hell so that the dead can truly walk the Earth. If you dig the torture, gore, and slaughter of your fellow humans, this is your series. (It’s also got a very cool website where you zombie lovers can buy all kinds of King Zombie stuff.)

Deadworld doesn’t have a director yet, but Hayter is in the process of writing the script, and will also help design the world of the film. He and Carver are producing under their Dark Heroes banner, alongside Mechanic’s Pandemonium company. (It’s a Fox reunion!) They’re hoping to launch a Deadworld franchise, and a multiple story arc they can splash over all kinds of properties. If all goes well, King Zombie will be hunting us down next year … and God help us all.”

So I see this as some exciting news for a genre that as of lately been beat pretty far into the ground! In the meantime hunt down that trade or if you want you can get every issue on one disc digitally as well. Me though I like to read my comic books on paper thank you…

Just to back this up…absolute must for the zombie comic fans out there. Agreed…too bad nothing worked out for the new Image release, but a movie is a great idea.

Just to demonstrate my unadulterated zombie love…and utter dorkness… I have all of the original issues and have number one singed by the one and only Vincent Locke.

As a long time zombie enthusiast/critic, this is a classic!
