Hi I’m Michael Cera & I Only Know How to Play One Character!!

I am not sure if you have all heard the hype on the upcoming “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”, directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) but just today the official trailer was released. I have been pretty excited about what Mr. Wright was going to do next as his last two films were pretty damn amazing. So I just checked out the trailer for the new flick, which is based on the comic series of the same name (put out by Portland Oregon based indie comic publisher Oni Press) and I must say the  trailer looks like a pretty good time! However one thing kinda urks me a bit, the fact that we have Michael Cera once again as “George Michael” in the movie!

Yeah we’ve the got the kinda shy, kinda awkward, kinda quirky Cera back again as the same damn charcter he’s played in well……EVERYTHING he’s ever starred in!! I am personally getting a little bit sick of his schtick! Just to be completely honest. I understand I’ll probably get alot of shit for this from everyone saying “god damn you, Michael Cera is a comedic freakin’ GENIUS-get a CLUE already!” That’s fine though if you like seeing George Michael Bluth in every film you watch with him in it! This guy seriously needs to reinvent himself! If you look under the definition of “One Trick Pony” in the dictionary I’m pretty sure you’ll find Cera’s picture there!  What if Sacha Baron Cohen starred in like fifteen films where he acted like Borat in everyone only under a different name? That’d get pretty annoying right?? Same thing is going on here. So though the film looks like a great time, and I will go see it, I’m really not looking forward to Cera’s performance. It’s funny because after seeing Superbad I never thought I’d get sick of the guy. Also to set the record straight there’s Jesse Eisenberg too, who’s really beginning to become Michael Cera junior. He needs to stop that soon-the last thing we need is two Michael Cera’s running  around Hollywood!

Anyway if you haven’t heard about the film already here’s the premise:

“Scott Pilgrim (Michael Sera , bass guitarist for the garage band Sex Bob-omb, has just met the girl of his dreams. However, he must defeat Ramona Flowers’ seven evil ex-boyfriends, who are coming to kill him.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass — and now is back in town — to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes control her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past, from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.”

Howdy, Pete. Just wanted to say that I dig the blog, and I agree with you on the whole Michael Cera / Jesse Eisenberg thing. However, in Eisenberg’s defense, he did implement the shy, dorkster facade an entire year before Michael Cera came along. For proof, see Roger Dodger, which was released thirteen months prior to Arrested Development’s debut. Anyway, keep up the good work; it’s always a great read.
