What do Neil Gaiman & A House on Rock in Wisconsin have in common?

Well it’s definately feeling as if the summer has come to an end here in Portland. Even though it’s not cold out yet there’s just something in the air that feels different. The summer of 2009 for me was a bit of a dull experience  & one thing I should have was headed back to my home state of Wisconsin. Beleive it or not there is alot of cool things to do there besides drink beer and eat cheese. Of course while doing all of these other cool things it’s kinda a requirement to be drinking beer and eating cheese as well at the same time. You know from my previous blog I would have once again tried to solve the mystery of the legendary ghostly Paulding Light & I would have most definately headed to Wisconsin Dells too. Never heard of it? Well It’s essentially an entire theme park city with the biggest & most water slides in the entire country! But there’s more on the city streets, there’s the wax museums, Ripley’s believe it or not museum, haunted houses, robot world, the wisconsin duck rides, water skiing shows, roller coasters ect. ect. and  it’s pretty much the best place to be during the hot humid Wisconsin summers.

There’s another bizarre place I would have visited as well which is the main reason why I write this,  that’s pretty close by the Dells in a city called Spring Green. The epic “House on the Rock“! What? you never heard of this amazing house before? Apparently not many people outside of the midwest have heard of it but it continues to be the most visited attraction in Wisconsin. It’s also one of the creepiest places I’ve ever been. In fact this house would make the perfect place for a horror flick!

The house  was built by Alex Jordan Jr and was opened in 1959. This overwhelming “house” is nothing short of breathtaking. It feels like something that you would see in your dreams since it’s maze like hallways and oddly shaped rooms are packed with strange toys that move, gardens, streets, instruments that play by themselves and a room with the larget indoor carousel in the world. The coolest thing about the carousel is that there isn’t a horse in sight. Instead it’s hundreds of weird creatures that you can ride on instead. The house is jam packed with so many odd things in so many rooms that one could spend days admiring the odd antiques and the even stranger architexture.

The House on the Rock also appears in a book called American Gods written by Neil Gaiman. In this book, the house is a portal straight into the mind of the Gods. In the forementioned room billed with the world’s largest carousel, the main characters ride the carousel’s creatures and get transported into the mind of the god Odin. So just by this fact alone you can tell there is truely something special about this structure.

So next time you’re in Wisconsin folks make sure to grab a case of beer and some of those slimy cheese curds from the mini-mart and check this place out!

Even from the outside this house is one creepy place….

This is the most horrible thing I have ever found myself wishing to experience.

I would give just about anything to have the means to travel to Wisconsin, if only to experience this bizarre and fascinating house.
