Well not sure if you’ve all been keeping up with The Astonishing X-men lately but one of my favorite characters recently rejoined the team – Alpha Flight’s Northstar. As you all know he is easily the most popular and was the first openly gay superhero. Marvel is seeming to try and make history again with issue #50 of Astonishing X-men as he proposes to his boyfriend Kyle in a Bryant Park in NYC.
The only problem is he gets rejected! Then in the same day it appears that his bf is kidnapped by an evil unseen nemesis the same one we assume that has been controlling The Marauders (yeah the guys from the historic Mutant Massacre of the 80′s are back). Anyway it appears that at the end of the issue Northstar is going to have to take down Wolverine and Gambit as they are now also under the control. But don’t fret everyone because in a rather lame move Marvel has already shown us the cover of issue #51 where we see Northstar & Kyle getting hitched!
An amazing cover with all his buddies from Alpha Flight and the X-men gathered around them. Well all I have to say is it’s about time Northstar! Kudos to Marvel too who to my knowledge will go down in history with the first Gay superhero (who’s actually an awesome character) and now the first Gay Superhero Marriage!

Being a huge Alpha Flight fan I was somewhat saddened by the news today that Alpha Flight is no longer going to be an ongoing series as recently announced. It seems that all we are going to get right now is the recent limited series which was for the most part a pretty fun solids ride. It was great to have all the original characters back again-and even better that Major Maple Leaf was no where in sight! Still however I think that Alpha Flight could have been and should have been even better this time around.
It seems to me that no one can make it quite as interesting as the original series by John Byrne. Heck we even got Wolverine making a cameo in this last run-yeah yeah I know Wolverine is everywhere these days, but one place he really needs to be is Alpha Flight as he was once a member and has a crazy history with the group. I for one think he needs to quit the Avengers and hell maybe even the X-men and head back to his roots in Canada. How awesome would that be? Become a full fledged member again? At the very very least I think there should be a series, much like the current Captain America & Bucky, that chronicles his past with the team from when Mac and Heather Hudson (his other red headed obsession) found him. How about that Marvel?
Either way I am pretty disappointed Marvel went back on their decision to make Alpha a mainstay monthly. From what I hear in the latest issue though is that two Alpha members are going to make a major impact on the X-universe. My guess is it’s Northstar and Aurora, but they quite honestly have had their chance, Northstar already was a member of the X-men and Aurora part of the Weapon X series….My hope would be for Sasquatch, Puck or Snowbird. Either way I hold hope someday someone will truly do justice to the team as their stories could be right up there with any superhero team around today! Long Live Alpha Flight!!

So I just got done reading the brand new Alpha Flight 0.1 and it was a pretty nice re-introduction to the original team! It had some real great artwork by Ben Oliver and Dan Green and a great cover which brought back memories of John Byrne. What really would have been great would have been if they could have actually got Byrne to draw this new series(check out the amazing pick below by Byrne). So far so good here as we get a pretty interesting idea of some sort of political turmoil in Canada as their elections are about to begin and a new party called Unity is revealed. I am assuming that Unity leader must win the election and somehow turn the country against Alpha Flight? We’ll see I guess!
Anyway the whole resurrected cast is here, well sorta… (more…)

I can’t say I didn’t see it coming, today as it was announced that Darren Aronofsky would no longer be directing “The Wolverine”, a stand alone movie that would have had nothing to do (thank god) with the first Wolverine movie. According to Aronofsky the movie would keep him away from his family for far too long-though many are saying it was due to not having enough creative control over the movie. Either way there you have it-finally something exciting was geared up to go down with the character, something dark and dare I say actually intellectually engaging?
Well now that Darren is off to do something more artsy I’m sure we’re gearing up to get more of the same bullshit that we got served with that last film…ughhh. I really had high hopes for a dark Wolverine movie done the way the character deserves. Apparently the show will go on with another director with Jackman still set to play Wolverine.
Now the question is who will they get to take a stab at Wolvie? Your guess is as good as mine, it seems to me it’d better be someone who actually gives a damn and isn’t just trying to serve up another load of shit to force feed the masses- Chris Nolan, Guillermo de Toro hell I’d even take Zack Snyder! But it seems they’re all busy with other projects….um Bryan Singer we need you now more than ever!! in the mean time check this out-it’s actually a lot better than the last Wolverine movie…not bad for a fun fan boy film actually-maybe we should just give up and give this guy the job…

Remember when The X-Men were really bad ass? Back in the 80′s they sure seemed that way-with Storm sporting her mohawk and Wolverine tokin’ on a cig reciting Clint Eastwood lines on their beautifully drawn John Romita Jr. covers. Man those were the days I tell ya! This amazing cover is taken from the “Mutant Massacre” storyline that ripped out the souls of their readers back in the 80′s. The same storyline that took Angel’s wings away from him and introduced Sabretooth as one of the most frightening villains the X-men and Wolverine would then continually face off with. Anyway John Romita Jr. was putting out some of his best artwork ever back then and this cover is a reason why to this day he’s still in the lime light as one of the best in the industry!

Let’s face it Wendigo is one of the coolest Marvel Comics characters ever and X-men # 140 from 1980 is probably the BEST portrayal of him as being drawn by John Byrne. Not only is the cover to this comic 100% classic but the whole story is just damn awesome. The real story starts in X-men # 139 as Wolverine and Nightcrawler head off to Canada to help none other than Alpha Flight take down the vicious beast. I miss simple storylines like this one which features them all shacking up in a cabin in the woods together. This is one of the classic Claremont/Byrne isssues and may be a bit pricy in it’s original form-but it can be found reprinted several different places-Long live WEN-DI-GO!

It happens in the movies all the time, when suddenly out of no where a C list or D list actor suddenly makes the jump into a blockbuster flick somehow (like Stephen Dorff in the new Sofia Coppola flick)-well it happens in the comics too and the upcoming Wolverine: The Best There is #2 proves that! It was a while back where I profiled the ultra lame Madcap right here as one of the world’s lamest villains, a D-list character who made a few ridiculous appearances in Captain America in the 80′s using a bubble gun that drove people batty and taking on taking on Cap’s buddy Nomad several times.
Well now good ol’ Madcap is bringing his antics back in the new ultra violent Charlie Hutson penned Wolverine series. This time however it seems that Madcap is even more fucked in the head than imagined as he’s now working for Wolverine’s newest villain Contagion and from the sneek peek it appears he’s ripped out his own eyes. Since Madcap can’t feel any pain this upcoming bout proves to be an interesting one I’m pumped to check out! Who knows too maybe this will put Madcap on the map as one of Wolvie’s A-list enemies-lord knows we’ve had enough of Sabretooth! Now maybe if we can just get The Slug out of hibernation to take on Logan ??

I am going to start posting some of my all time favorite comic book covers right here every week. Some will be old some new but all the covers will be totally rad. This first one is a classic and I’m sure it’s on everyone’s list of greatest covers already but really this one from the 80′s can’t be posted enough. It’s during a classic storyline involving the Brood-and this cover by Mark Silvestri (X-men 234) is one of the best X-men images of all time…Stay tuned for some more well known and forgotten comic book cover classics!!

Wow now here’s some good news out there for all of you people who actually love the character, Wolverine. It has been confirmed by Darren Aronofsky that the upcoming Wolverine movie he is directing will NOT be a sequel to that god awful pile of flaming horseshit we were delivered a couple years back entitled X-men Origins: Wolverine he tells Hitfix. Instead this movie will be an entity entirely of its own.
“The film that he’s directing is officially called “The Wolverine,” (more…)
