The 8 Other Movies “Super 8″ Owes it’s Success to… by petersaturday

So I’m here to tell tell you a few things today, as you guessed “Super 8″ is the movie to see this summer, I loved it. Secondly it’s very obvious that JJ Abrams was a fan of The Goonies and E.T. and was trying his best (he succeeded) in replicating the nostalgic vibe of those movies for the big screen this year. He gave us that feeling we all have missed for so many years in our summer movies. But most of all it was a formula that had been used many times throughout the 80′s not only in E.T. and The Goonies but many more that have been all but forgotten.

It was a formula that seemed to put kids on dangerous adventures, most often supernatural ones, usually in small towns or the suburbs and most often trying to prove to their parents some crazy story to be true with often times unlucky results. These stories were filled with wonder and most of all they were so undeniably fun to watch that to see a movie like “Super 8″ or even Joe Dante’s latest movie “The Hole” in this day and age is a breath of fresh air. So here today in response to Super 8 I’d like to honor 8 more movies Abrams was likely heavily influenced by when he made his latest

1.  The Gate (1986) To say JJ wasn’t influenced by this movie when making Super 8 would be a crime!! (more…)

Ditch the Hero and Get With The Zero Boys! by petersaturday

I just recently was able to see yet another great 1980′s horror movie that I had never seen before! These are really great moments for a person like myself who really thrives on a great 80′s flick that delivers the goods! Better yet is seeing one that somehow slipped through my hands up until now. This most recent movie is The Zero Boys way back from 1986.

To say this is a flat out horror movie just isn’t fair as it’s taking equal parts from 80′s action movies like Rambo and blending it all together into one fun mess of a schlocky good movie! (more…)

World’s Greatest Horror Themed Music Videos! Fat Boys! by petersaturday

It’s been a while since I have posted any new horror themed music videos, quite simply because I thought I had them all covered-well I was dead wrong! It suddenly dawned upon me that The Fresh Prince was not the only one who rapped about Freddy Kruger back in the 1980′s – we also had “Are You Ready for Freddy?” by hip hop pioneers The Fat Boys! Check out this classic video! I have also heard that the Fat Boys are back at it again, with Doug E. Fresh replacing the late great Buff Love , The Human Beatbox (rip), gearing up to do some recording and touring!

Alice Cooper’s Monster Identity Crisis! by petersaturday

I loved it in the 80′s when rock stars starred in bad horror movies! One such movie, which is a real stinker is Monster Dog from 1984 starring Alice Cooper. What really do you expect from Claudio Fragasso, best know for directing Troll 2?! C’mon! So yes let me be honest with you this movie is pretty bad-but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have it’s redeeming qualities!

The plot is simple, Cooper stars as Vincent Raven, the world’s hottest rock star and he’s traveling back to his home town to make a new hot fresh video (which by the way is a total piece of shit once you see how it turns out)! He brings along a bunch of his annoyingly square friends, who on their way to his old creepy childhood mansion home run into…..a god damn monster dog (and the token creepy crazy old dude who tells them they’re all….DOOMED)!! The Best Horror Film of 2011? by petersaturday

Last night was an epic evening at the theater! You know the kind of experience where afterwards you feel like you hung out at an amusement park for and hour and a half? Yeah it was that fun and worth every penny spent. I have to say I had pretty low expectations for  James Wan’s newest flick “Insidious”. I was not a fan of the Saw franchise, I thought Dead Silence was anything but scary and Death Sentence was hokey as hell.

So why the hell did I shell out the money for this one? Pure chance..But a chance well taken as I am willing to bet this one is going to be my favorite horror movie of 2011. (more…)

Is M. Night Shyamalan Really THAT Bad?!! by petersaturday

So the news is out M. Night Shyamalan has won multiple awards this year at the Razzies. The M. Night action-flick, which was razzed on by critics upon its release last year, won for Worst Director, Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor and a brand new category — Worst Eye-gouging Misuse of 3-D. Wow harsh huh? There was a time when Night was considered a genius.

I have to say personally The Last Airbender was pretty mediocre-and I honestly never even got around to even finishing watching the movie. But worst movie of 2010?? No way. Yeah it did indeed suck in a hard way-but I’d say it was leaps and bounds better than anything Adam Sandler put out last year!

So what gives with Night now days? Is he really THAT bad? (more…)

Go Find The Hole!! by petersaturday

I finally got to see the latest Joe Dante movie last night! Needless to say “The Hole” was everything I was hoping for it to be and more! The only problem is that this great little movie hasn’t been released here in the USA yet-so I found a copy of it on Ebay, and import copy to be more precise. It has been released abroad in 3-D in theaters but has yet to hit the states-and I have been wondering if it will indeed ever make it to theaters?

Well I will tell you this much-it’s exactly what you want out of a Joe Dante flick-just a lot of great fun! A horror movie that’s a throw back to old classics like Gremlins, Poltergeist and The Gate! (more…)

Evil Ms. Santa Claus vs The Goonies! by petersaturday

Yeah, Yeah I know it’s way after Christmas and nobody gives two shits about the holidays-but the other day I discovered a neat little flick that I will definately remind everyone about next year-but while it’s fresh in my head I thought I’d mention it here. The film Cuento de Navidad entitled in English as A Christmas Tale (Not to be confused with Rare Exports) was a film included in the Spanish horror dvd set 6 Films to Keep You Awake. In a nutshell it’s a great little horror thriller that only clocks in at 71 minutes in length-but has alot going for it.

First of all it’s directed by Paco Plaza the man who’s responsible for the amazing  REC & REC 2 in which the american movie Quarantine was based. Second it stars (more…)

HAAAAAAPPY NEW YEARS!! Wow it’s already the new years? What the hell, am I trapped in a hyper speed time warp??? Where does all this damn time go?! Oh well 2011 here we come right? Personally I was hoping by 2011 I’d be flying around on a hover board like Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future 2-but hey I’ll be happy enough with an Ipod I guess…anyway I just wanted to warn anyone who’s thinking about partyin’ to stay away from trains!

Cuz Terror Train, one of the only New Years films out there that’s worth watching proves that! Jamie Lee Curtis finds that out the hard way! So if you are in need of a good New Years Flick go rent this sucker tonight!!

Sint: New Holiday Horror Discovered!! by petersaturday

I was lucky enough to see the wonderful “Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale” this holiday season, a movie I ranted alot about here before I even saw it. It will be one that I’ll be purchasing on DVD as soon as it hits stores as it’s truelty a wonderful little christmas film. Well I also discovered another movie I missed out  on this holiday season, this one however may be a while to wait to see-It’s called “Sint” and it looks pretty damn bad ass…

This one is a Dutch film direceted by Dick Maas, who’s probably most well know here for his movie “The Shaft” which starred Naomi Watts, has now decided to take on not Santa Claus but his similar companion good ol’ jolly Saint Nick (more…)
