So not only is Nimoy done with Star Trek but acting in general as he’s apparently filmed his last appearance for the awesome Fringe television series. It seems too that Nimoy is planning his last appearances on the convention circuit as well. Dammit I knew I should have went to that last comic con!  We really can’t say though that he left us too soon as he now is 79 years old and swore once before he was done with the Spock character forever. It does seem like he actually had some good intentions for letting Spock go this time “I want to get off the stage. Also, I don’t think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto,” he says, referring to the actor who portrayed a youthful Spock in last summer’s smash Star Trek relaunch. “He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue.”

This can only mean one thing, Bill Shatner is definately ready for his return as Kirk in the next film sadly not due out until 2012. I really, really hope ‘ol Shatner didn’t have anything to do with Nimoy’s bow out. You know Bill can be kind of an attention hog! Either way as disappointing as it is to see Leonard retire we can all say that he left us with a true legacy to enjoy! I’m gonna miss him! Live long and prosper Leonard!

Well there have been announcements on teleporting photos across a room…cool, but a long way to go till we get to something bigger. May theorists have bought into Warp speed…but again it looks great in the math and on paper. In a recent Engadget blog, Diana Eng and Dave Clausen have posted instructions on the net on how you can build your very own Bluetooth enabled Federation Communicator. If you follow the link to Makezine.com you can see all of the detailed instructions and shopping list of parts needed to start your project. With the unit Bluetooth enabled, it will work with any cell phone that uses a Bluetooth headset…how cool is that?

I realize this is hard top when it comes to cell phone bling…but one notable mention has to go out to the recently announced Michael Jackson cell phone; being release in Japan…soon??? (I wish I could read Japanese to relay the details).

So here is a dream scenario…
You get dressed up in your Star Fleet uniform, put on your shiny black shoes and sparkly glove…and moonwalk the night away while perpetrating like you’re talking on your Star Fleet issue communicator. Oh yeah, shoot for the stars!

You really didn’t think ol’ Shat would stay out of the picture for long did you? No way! Bill always gets his way! That’d be great with him returning as Kirk right? What Trek fan doesn’t want him in their Star Trek movies? My only concern is why Abrams is considering this? Is it just because Shatner got his way? Is this really necessary?

I love Shatner as much as the next guy but part of me really thinks maybe having Nimoy now existing along side the younger version of himself was just the right amount of the original Star Trek that we needed to get our fix and authenticity. I think since this movie was done so well it might be time now to move forward into the future rather that going back to the past once again just because it can be done. Abrams is a genius though and if he does bring back the original Kirk perhaps it will be done with good reason and not just for show. Here’s what he most recently had to say about this to reporters via Cinematical.com:    

“As someone who was a William Shatner fan… it was a foregone conclusion that we wanted Shatner in the movie,” Abrams explained. “The problem was that his character died, on screen, in one of the Trek films, and because we decided, very early on, that we wanted to adhere to Trek canon as best we could. [That] was a huge challenge, because even the original series, in many ways, didn’t always adhere to Trek canon, [so] the required machinations to get Shatner into the movie would have been very difficult to do, given the story we wanted to tell, and also to give him the kind of part that he would be happy with.”

“It was this thing where it would have felt like a gimmick in order to get Shatner in the movie,” Abrams continued, “which would have honestly, to me, been distracting. [But] how do you put him in the movie when you want him in it so badly, and yet the story actually seems in counter purposes with the story you want to tell?”

Abrams then explained that he’s currently in talks with Shatner to act in the next movie. The screenwriters however are still developing the final plot. He said this about Shat:

“In terms of moving forward, I am open to anything,” Abrams said. “I would love to figure out something, given the challenge of introducing these new characters and given the burden of having to cast these people. I feel like the first movie did some of the heavy lifting that needed to be done, in order to free us to continue, going forward. Maybe there’s less of a burden and there’s going to be more opportunity to work with him again. I would love to work with him.”

We’ll see what the the outcome is. No matter what I’ll be there for the next film and I’m sure once Shatner appears onscreen my worries and concerns will quickly fade as I realize that the Lgendary Captain Kirks is once again gracing the silver screen….

Here’s Shat as he explains to Abrams how easy it should have been to bring Kirk back! 

 Ok so maybe I’m being a little knit picky about things but if JJ was on top of his game he would have included ol’ Finnegan in someway in the latest movie. Besides this epsiode Shore Leave has one of the greatest fights for Kirk in the history of all Trek!

Even if it was all just a manifestation of Kirks mind! So let’s hope that the directors cut features a full on battle and gives Finnegan his proper placement in the movie series!! Highly unlikely!

Originally, I had alot of doubts about our main man Chris Pine as the new James T. Kirk and while he was quite a bit different than the man we know and love he delivered the role on all levels. At times I must say though I did see a little bit of Shatner in his performance( though some people think I am just delusional ) , whether it was the way he spoke at times, or ran or even the way he crossed his legs while in the captains chair on the bridge. I was very pleased with him as the iconic Kirk and though I don’t think he’s better than Shat, he definately took the role and added something new to it while not being a laughable carbon copy. 

One person who really blew me away was Karl Urban as Leonard ”Bones” McCoy. All  I can say is that he truely nailed the part. From the moment he walks on screen and opens his mouth there is no doubt he’s the perfect man for the job! Then there was Zachary Quinto as Spock who gave another amazing performance. Aside from looking exactly like Nimoy he also plays the part perfectly. It’s a little different take on Spock but in his younger years it truely made sense, his demeanor as he struggles between his human side and his vulcan side.  However one part I could have done without was the supposed romance between him and Uhura. It seemed a little forced, a bit out of place in the storyline and to be honest I was less than impressed with Zoe Saldana as Uhura. I think Simon Pegg was a great Scotty( plus I must admit I have a soft spot for Pegg ) and Anton Yelchin did a fine job as well as Chekov( I still think they should have straightened his hair! ).

The plotline was amazing and while it completely changes the Trek universe as we know it it still keeps with the continuity of the previous movies. I thought Nero was a great villain, though a little more screen time for him would have been nice and I am so glad I read the ‘Star Trek: Countdown’ official movie prequel  before seeing the film. It really explains Spock and Nero’s relationship in a way that was not presented in the film itself. I highly recommend checking that out if you have not already!

The movie’s effects were excellent, and while the cg was perfect it also had enough real make up and costuming to keep people like myself satisfied as well. The story was exciting and compelling too, but there is one moment of the film that really brings it all back home. The arrival of Leonard Nimoy as the much older Spock. This portion of the movie authenticates the whole experience, letting you know that you are indeed still watching Star Trek. It was by far my favorite part of the movie giving me chills and a big fat smile(Recently Nimoy stated he’s “on board for more Star Trek” if JJ wants him!).

So yeah Star Trek is officially “cool” even though in my eyes it always has been. This movie just reminded everyone how amazing these original characters turely are. They did this one right. It had heart, it had action, an amazing story and one thing it better have is a sequel because I want more! Here’s to Star Trek back on track in 2009! Who would have ever thought……

 William Shatner made Kirk one of the most iconic characters in sci-fi history.  He’ s one of the main reasons I love Star trek. Period. Since this whole idea of casting began I have been worried about how they are going to pull this off and truely please the fans. I thought Matt Damon was a great choice for Kirk-but alas he was just too damn old.

So now we have Chris Pine, virtually a nobody in the role of Kirk. That doesn’t bother me one bit. What I am truely worried about when I see this movie is if this actor is really going to bring it to the table as the iconic Kirk we all know and love. I have heard he did not want to copy Shatner’s mannerisms but really in order to convince the audience that he is indeed Kirk he has to at least a little don’t you think? It makes sense since we have Nimoy back as the older original Spock that Kirk would also retain his characteristics in the movie too?

 Anyway I do hope and pray that they have done this film right. It is a HUGE gamble to try and cast other people in the roles of icons who’ve starred in countless episodes and 7 motion pictures. Let’s cross our fingers that Chris Pine and the rest of the cast keep faithful to TOS and don’t end up like some lame revamped “The Fast and The Furious” style Trek characters. I for one hope there is a little Shatner in the new Star Trek movie-what do you think?
