Do We Want Brandon Routh Back? by petersaturday

It certainly seems that Superman is back on track once again with the recent news that  Chris Nolan and director Zack Snyder are determined to get  the man of steel done right this time! That’s great news for all the legions of Supes fans out there-Who else would you trust more with the character? I guess we could have said that once before when we heard that Bryan Singer was onboard for the last disappointing Superman installment.

Still though I have great expectations that this time around Superman will be kicking ass like he should have been and did before in the late 70′s. The question on everyone’s minds now is who will don the red and blue this time around? Surprisingly Brandon Routh is being considered (more…)

Let’s Get Ready To Rumble! The greatest Cartoon Brawls Part 4! by petersaturday

Yeah it’s fighting time again here at Universal Dork! Today we have a great cartoon fight between Superman and Solomon Grundy! This One comes from the awesome Justice League cartoon. I always enjoyed them because they were always so well animated. It kinda gets me pumped about the possibiltiy of a Justice League movie!

It’s always nice to see good ol’ Supes brawling the bad guys at least the ones who can actually put up a fight-as you can see in this epic cartoon battle Solomon Grundy is no push over!

Bring Back the GIANT Treasury Editions! by petersaturday

When I was a kid there was really nothing that was more cool than a brand new comic book except one thing: A Treasury Edition comic book! What are those? You don’t remember the Treasury Editions?!! Well let me refresh your memory. They were basically gigantic versions of your favorite comic books sometimes three or more stories and sometimes more than one title per book! These Treasury Editions were huge measuring ( I am actually measuring one of mine right now!)  13 & 1/2 x 10 inches and having 80 advertisement free pages! These were very popular in the 70′s but seemed to fizzle out in the 80′s. Sometimes the issues would have brand new covers and the back cover was always specifically drawn for the treasury edition which was essentially like a poster!

These were just as rad as any toy and I remember carrying around my stack of these pretty much everywhere I went being the envy of any kid that saw me! (more…)

Cartoons Dorks Should Be Watching #1: Ben 10 by konales

Thanks for joining Universal Dork for issue #1 of our ‘toons you should sure as hell be watching. For this kick off I want to mention a ’toon that is popular with kids but I quickly overlooked. Fortunately, I am a big enough dork to watch any cartoon I can get my eyes on while working out early in the morning. Well I was blessed to have repeats of Ben 10 showing at the crack of down while sweating it up…and I found it was full of many pleasant surprises. As usual, I encourage you to follow the jump for all of the essential information and this unlikely superhero youth!

Back in 2004, there was an announcement for the ultra awesome limited comic series Global Frequency to be adapted into a TV miniseries.  Life could not get any better, right?  They even cut a pilot for the WB…and the fans loved it…the studio shit on it!  WTF?  Oh yeah, they probably had a reality show that was a priority, or maybe something to remake.  So it went nowhere unfortunately, but now there are rumblings again that the Frequency will be created and broadcast on the CW.  Whoa yeah!  So if you are a comic fan…a Warren Ellis fan…or hell, you just like amazing sci-fi stories, I believe this Global Frequency is on your wavelength.

Somebody please help me with this tricky story problem! If you have one deformed bounty hunter searching for a Voodoo doctor trying to raise an army of the undead and you add one really hot chick, a little bit of John Malkovich and have a metal band score the movie…WTF do you get??? Apparently this is the vision for the new Jonah Hex movie that is set for release in June 2010. Please read on.

This dork recently learned that Joel Silver is considering a remake of Swamp Thing…yeah, in 3D. At first I threw up my arms and yelled “No! Not Joel Silver!” But then I sat back and reviewed his list of contributions over the years. After my meditation time with the list I realize there were a lot of good, a lot of bad…and some downright ugly. Here is a list that I know I have seen over the years, and my preference. Please feel free to debate!

Power…Courage…A Prerequisite for the Spiral Zone! by konales

Growing up there were so many cool cartoons. One that always caught this Dorks attention, and remains one of the lesser followed/known is the Spiral Zone. Airing in 1987-88, Spiral Zone was the Trademarked to Tonka toys and ran for 65 episodes. In the end, the series was a financial flop on the part of Tonka, so it appeared they never wanted the light of day to shine upon this great creation ever again. Until recently, the only episodes available for viewing was a small collection of 6 episodes released on VHS by Tonka. Well one man’s love for the series and his shear tenacity shined through to provide a new 8 disc DVD set collecting all of the original episodes!

Justin Timberlake rumoured to star as the Green Lantern…. by petersaturday

Hmmm….so I have heard a rumour that pop star Justin Timberlake is reportedly been considered to wear the emerald power ring on the big screen. Acccording to Aint It Cool News  they have begun screen testing for the role of the Green Lantern and it appears that Timberlake is in the running. I wonder what the Guardians of the Universe would think about this huh? I could think of about two dozen people that would make a better Green Lantern than Timberlake but then again what do I know I am just some nerd with a blog about comic books and Sci Fi with “The Beyonder” at the top of our website as our mascot!

John Byrne:Best Artist Ever! by petersaturday

So the 1frombeyond’s post got me all fired up yesterday about MY favorite comic book artist of all time, Mr. John Byrne! Ever since I was a kid I loved and knew his artwork. I’d always get pretty pumped when I would see a comic book drawn by him-even at my young age I just knew there was something special about it. Perhaps it was his amazing sense of detail? Either way there are so many things I truely love about his artwork. To me he is one of the All Time Greatest and most influential comic book artists ever. Right up there with Kirby and yes even…um…Liefeld.

Anyway I decided to post some of my favorite pics that I have always loved of his artwork. Whether it’s a cover or interior panel it’s clear he was and is still the master. In a day and age where any and every band is reuniting and Harrison Ford is once again Indiana Jones, I do truely think it’s time that Marvel reunites John Byrne & Chris Claremont  for another run on the X-Men!!
