I was watching some old cartoons today starting out with some of the awesome Max Fleischer animated Superman stuff. I hadn’t even realized that the animation was based on rotoscoping, which is essentially tracing over real actors to get the smooth real life movements into cartoon form. That explains a lot as to why those Superman cartoons feel so damn special. I knew that technique was employed by Ralph Bakshi for many of his films but had no idea that Fleischer was the originator of that style. Shows how much I know huh?
Well this also lead me to another amazing cartoon, Princess Iron Fan which was Asia’s first feature length animated film. They too used the rotoscope style of animation back in 1941.
What we get as a result is one truly breath taking little film. Directly influenced by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the films directors, The Wan Brothers tried to rival it with this Chinese epic. Check it out…
Later in 1966 we got this awesome live action version-Amazing!!

Check out this animated fan made trailer of the upcoming Avengers movie put together with old school 1960′s animated clips! Pretty funny and really would have close to perfect if they could have somehow found an older version of Nick Fury (this one here is from 1995) as it looks a little out of place with the rest. In the defense of the people who threw this together though it was the first time Fury was animated…still a nice treat for dorks like myself-check it!!

For those of you cartoon lovers out there I wanted to make sure that none of you missed “The Amazing Screw-on Head” from 2006. Based off of a Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame, one shot comic book of the same name from 2002. This single episode was the pilot for what was hoped to be a Sci-Fi channel original series. For whatever reason it was not picked up and we are left simply with this 22 minute episode full of brilliant animation, awesome quirky characters and a ton of action! I love Mignola and weekly read his comics and if there were more cartoons out there like this one the world would be a much better place!
Screw-on Head is the occult robot investigator of Abe Lincoln (this ass wipe again?! don’t get me started!) who can screw his head on and off into different bodies. He then follows Lincoln’s orders to fight zombies werewolves and whatever else goes bump in the night-kinda like a prequel to BPRD. The pilot had a survey to get peoples reactions, apparently it was too out there for the masses. It even had a star studded cast of Paul Giamatti, Patton Oswalt, Molly Shannon & David Hyde Pierce. What more could you ask for people? Well anyway if like rad cartoons and have never seen this check it out – you won’t be disappointed as it looks exactly like Mignola’s artwork has jumped off of the page of one of his comics!!

Wow we were all fooled into thinking “The Nightmare Before Christmas” was so damn original when it came out-but that’s because most people I know never even knew that Rankin / Bass’ “Mad Monster Party” even existed!! I know that I didn’t but it’s a documented fact that Tim Burton did and it was a big influence on his stop motion stuff. I am probably the biggest Rankin / Bass Christmas Special fan of all time – but today I just discovered the Rankin / Bass stop motion animated world is larger than I imagined! That’s quite a good thing!
This movie has got classic monsters like The Werewolf, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Hunchback, Invisible Man, Jekyll & Hyde, Mummy, It ( a King Kong knock off), Dracula, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein and his Bride played by Phyllis Diller. It’s also penned by MAD magazine writer Harvey Kurtzman!
So this is on my list of must see dvds. I know that it was released in 2009 on dvd so I assume it’s going to be easy to find and probably right on youtube. It came out in 1967 yet it took me until 2012 to discover-I love it!! It makes me wonder how many other great stop motion movies are out there that I have no clue about?! It will be a fun search….

Hey has anyone ever seen this cartoon before? I guess it’s from 1987 and must have slipped under my radar! Well it’s got a pretty bad ass theme song and the animation reminds me of the Thundercats, Silverhawks and Tigersharks cartoon. The Bionic Six looks like a winner that’s for sure-I gotta do some research on this one!

October is going to be a good month for Tv we got The Walking Dead premiering and another rad little cartoon set to be out on the 20th! The Avengers! I must say that so far from the previews that this looks like it’s gonna be a fun little cartoon. I was caught right away when I saw the Wrecker and then later in the preview it looks like an Avengers “Breakout” type storyline is set to happen as well. I pretty excited also for an Avengers line up featuring the Hulk too and glimpses of other classic Avengers making the cut to like the Black Panther is rad.
It looks like they got the villains to keep them busy too. Supposedly the debut will feature the Avengers up against one of my fav villains ever-Modok!

So in my opinion The Secret of Nimh could easily be the best animated movie ever! It really doesn’t get any better- an epic, intellegent story, Don Bluth‘s absolutley stunning animation and some serious ass kicking action to boot!
Seriously rewatch this movie if you haven’t seen it in a while and you WILL not be let down! I wish we could get Bluth back to focus on another amazing movie- let’s not forget he animated Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace too both incredible classic 80′s arcade games! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find a fight sequence of better quality to put here-but the final battle between the evil rat Jenner & the heroic Justin is one of the best cartoon battles ever!

So I’ve put up some pretty epic cartoon fights lately, at least I think so! I’ve several more planned to post up here as well to get the adrenaline pumping too. But what about those totally un-epic cartoon battles??
Well look no further because now I’m on a mission to bring you some of the most god awful cartoon brawls I can find! Believe me there are alot of them! So first we’ll start with a pretty crap-tastic cartoon battle between Spider-man, Electro, the Green Goblin and The Vulture! This sounds like a dream battle huh? Well get ready to be severly unimpressed with this ridiculous 4 way snooze fest! Good thing Spidey mastered ventriloquism!

Ok well I am not really sure if anyone really gives two shits about cartoon brawls but I’m keeping up this thread cuz I do! Hey when you’re bored you’ll search for just about anything on You Tube right? Well when you mention a cartoon fight there’s one character who definateley likes to get rowdy-Popeye! Popeye has kicked so much ass in his time it’s absolutely unbelievable! He’s been doing it for decades!
Pratically ALL ol’ Pops does is kick ass every day of his life! He deals with alot of B.S. contantly from Brutus and constantly keeps giving him chances to prove himself to not be a total douche but ends up having to waste him literally almost every day of his damn life! So let’s take a quick look at a good video which compiles some good ass whoopings delivered by Mr. Eye himself!!
